Super Rant’s Weekend Post-Credits: Spider-Man: Brand New Day Trailer, Lanterns Controversy, And More

With so many new superhero movie and TV updates happening constantly, we created Super Rant’s Weekend Post-Credits. This weekly series gathers all the biggest news about the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the DC Universe (DCU) in one convenient place.

Super Rant has compiled all the latest MCU and DCU news – including sneak peeks, posters, interviews with the cast, and updates from James Gunn – into one convenient place. Here’s everything you need to know in our Weekend Post-Credits for March 16th-22nd.

MCU News: Spider-Man: Brand New Day Trailer, Daredevil: Born Again, And More

The first trailer for the new Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, from Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, was released this week, and it’s the biggest Marvel news right now.

The new trailer hints at big changes for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, showing how his powers have evolved after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. We’ll see familiar faces like The Punisher and Hulk return, along with classic villains like Scorpion and The Hand. However, the movie still has plenty of secrets, including the role of Sadie Sink’s character and the identity of the main villain.

The marketing for Spider-Man: Brand New Day was innovative. Instead of releasing the full trailer all at once, the team released 2-second clips every hour for 24 hours, letting fans share them online. This created a lot of excitement, and the trailer ultimately broke records, gaining over 700 million views on its first day.

Marvel has announced that the upcoming Punisher special on Disney+ will be its longest MCU special to date, clocking in at 60 minutes. Fans will see Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, after his appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. For comparison, Werewolf by Night ran for 53 minutes, and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special was 42 minutes long.

Okay, so I was watching Jimmy Kimmel and Charlie Cox was on, and of course, everyone immediately started asking him about Spider-Man: Brand New Day! The trailer had just dropped, and everyone’s wondering if Daredevil will show up in the movie, especially since Daredevil: Born Again season 2 is coming out next week. It’s all anyone could talk about!

Charlie Cox predictably denied being involved in Brand New Day. He also joked that he’d continue to deny it even if he was in the movie, echoing similar responses from Andrew Garfield before his return as Spider-Man in 2021’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, stars of the Avengers movies, shared the stage at the Oscars last weekend. They presented an award while the Avengers theme played, and playfully referenced their Marvel roles. Channing Tatum, who will reprise his role as Gambit, was in the audience as part of the fun, hinting at the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film.

Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio discussed what their characters, Daredevil (Matt Murdock) and Kingpin (Wilson Fisk), would be most ashamed of revealing during the attack on New York in the upcoming Thunderbolts movie. They shared their thoughts in an interview with The Direct.

Cox believed Daredevil’s inner turmoil stemmed from guilt over Foggy Nelson’s death and missed opportunities to help him. D’Onofrio, however, suggested that Kingpin’s shame originated from Wilson Fisk killing his father as a child. Both explanations seem very plausible and believable.

DCU News: Lanterns Controversy, Supergirl Timeline, And More

The creator of HBO’s upcoming “Lanterns” series, Damon Lindelof, apologized after facing criticism for a joke he made on a podcast. He had said the show’s color scheme was changed because green was “stupid.” The apology came after significant backlash, including comments from DC Comics legend Grant Morrison.

After the first trailer for Lanterns came out – and notably lacked the iconic green color – fans are hoping the show will slowly add more of the fantastical elements and signature color that made the original comics so popular as the series continues.

It would be exciting to see the realistic, gritty style of shows like True Detective expand into a more expansive, cosmic storyline. If Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart are investigating a murder in middle America, it suggests there’s likely a larger, otherworldly mystery at play.

I was so relieved to see David Jenkins, the creator of Our Flag Means Death, post an update about Booster Gold! There were whispers going around that the series might be canceled, but he confirmed it’s still happening, at least as far as he knows, and is still in development with DC Studios. It’s such a weight off my mind – I’m really excited about this show!

Booster Gold is easily one of the most interesting and funny heroes in the DC Universe. Hopefully, the planned TV series about him is still moving forward.

James Gunn, head of DC Studios, has confirmed where the upcoming Supergirl movie fits within the new DC Universe timeline. Most of the film will take place between the events of the Superman movie planned for 2025 and Man of Tomorrow in 2027. However, the trailers show that the movie will also include important flashbacks to the destruction of Krypton and the brief survival of Argo City.

Justin Hartley recently discussed his time playing Green Arrow on the show Smallville. With Smallville gaining popularity again on Netflix, he mentioned on The Jennifer Hudson Show that he’s open to playing a superhero again. He’d especially like to revisit the role of Green Arrow, though maybe with a more modern costume. “I’d like to jump back into that Green Arrow suit. Maybe not that exact suit, but something a little hipper,” he said.
