Nintendo and Illumination have given fans their first glimpse of Toad’s new design for the upcoming The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Keegan-Michael Key returns as the voice of Toad, a character who was surprisingly important in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The new look is a slight update to Toad’s appearance, staying true to the rich history of the Mario universe.
New images from upcoming board and card games based on The Super Mario Galaxy Movie have given fans their first glimpse of Toad’s new look in the sequel. He has a slight design change from the first movie, including a light on his mushroom cap that longtime Mario fans will immediately recognize.
The first glimpse of the redesigned Toad comes from the Spin ‘N Match game by Epoch Games, showcasing him in a small preview panel.

The upcoming pinball machine, themed after The Super Mario Bros. Movie, gives fans another quick look at the character Toad.

I’ve noticed a little hint of the incredible outfits from Toad in the artwork for a new balancing game – it’s clearly inspired by the movie, and it’s so cool to see even a small detail referencing those amazing designs!

In The Super Mario Movie, Toad appeared with his classic design: a large red and white mushroom cap, a blue vest, and a backpack full of helpful items.

As a big film fan, I’ve been keeping up with all the sneak peeks, and it looks like they’ve really leaned into Captain Toad’s design for the new movie! It’s a pretty direct match to how he looks in the Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker game. I especially noticed they included that little light on his mushroom cap – it’s a nice nod to both Super Mario Galaxy and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, which is awesome!

Another close-up shows Toad in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, with an excited look on his face.

Seeing that last shot on the box, I’m pretty sure that’s how he’ll look for the whole movie! It’s consistent with everything else, and it feels like his permanent style for the sequel.

In Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Toad isn’t just a Mushroom Kingdom helper – he’s transformed into a charmingly careful treasure hunter! He’s equipped with a big headlamp, a backpack, and a neckerchief, giving him a whole new look.

Comparing the game to the new look in the Galaxy movie reveals the film is using the headlamp and neckerchief, but isn’t including the character’s entire tan costume.

In addition to Toad’s more mature appearance, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is growing the world of the Mushroom Kingdom by introducing several new faces. We already know Rosalina (played by Brie Larson) and Bowser Jr. (played by Benny Safdie) will appear, and even more characters will be announced as the movie’s release date approaches.
Following the huge popularity of the first movie, Nintendo and Illumination have hinted at some exciting surprise appearances in the sequel. The new film will expand the Mario universe on the big screen, and is scheduled to be released in the US on April 3, 2026, with many of the original actors returning alongside some new cast members.
What Will Toad’s Role Be in The Mario Galaxy Movie?
If the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie focuses on a story inspired by Captain Toad, it hints that Toad might have a bigger role than just helping Mario (Chris Pratt) and Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy). While he was mainly a guide in the first movie, the new headlamp suggests he could have his own separate adventure, much like the gameplay in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.
Okay, so it’s becoming pretty obvious this new movie isn’t a straight-up adaptation of Super Mario Galaxy. We’re already seeing nods to Super Mario Odyssey in the trailers, which tells me they’re pulling inspiration from all over the Mario universe. Honestly, that’s great news! It opens the door for them to get really creative, and I wouldn’t be shocked—or even disappointed—if they give characters like Toad a lot more to do on their own. It feels like they’re building something bigger than just one game’s story.
Nintendo and Illumination are open to making movies about characters other than Mario. While Donkey Kong (voiced by Seth Rogen) probably won’t appear in the next Super Mario movie, he might get his own film instead. Although a Toad-focused movie isn’t currently planned, giving Toad a storyline that references his video game history could be popular with fans.
