The highly anticipated Super Mario Galaxy Movie has an official runtime that’s longer than any previous Illumination film, but this could create challenges for a potential sequel. Just three years after the huge success of the first Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo’s popular franchise returns. Chris Pratt as Mario and Charlie Day as Luigi will team up with Yoshi and reconnect with Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) for a new adventure in space, battling Bowser Jr. and having a near encounter with Princess Rosalina (Brie Larson).
Ahead of the April 1st release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, NBCUniversal registered the sequel with the EIDR database, noting a runtime of 95 minutes – making it unusually long for a film of this type.
The new movie is just three minutes longer than the first Super Mario Bros. Movie, which ran for a concise 92 minutes.
The movie’s length fits Illumination’s usual style of keeping films around 90 minutes, which is good for younger viewers. In fact, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is one of Illumination’s longest films in the past ten years. It’s the longest since Despicable Me 2 (2013) that isn’t part of the Sing series.
- Despicable Me – 95 minutes
- Hop – 95 minutes
- The Secret Life of Pets – 86 minutes
- Sing – 108 minutes
- Despicable Me 3 – 90 minutes
- The Grinch – 86 minutes
- The Secret Life of Pets 2 – 86 minutes
- Sing 2 – 110 minutes
- Minions: The Rise of Gru – 87 minutes
- The Super Mario Bros. Movie – 92 minutes
- Migration – 83 minutes
- Despicable Me 4 – 94 minutes
- The Super Mario Galaxy Movie – 95 minutes
Why The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s Runtime Is a Risky Choice

At 92 minutes, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a bit longer than other Illumination films like Despicable Me and Hop. However, despite being three minutes longer than the first movie, it still faces criticism. The original 2023 film was often criticized for being too short and not fully developing its story.
The Mario movie was widely celebrated for perfectly capturing the spirit of the long-running franchise. However, many viewers felt the story was weak, the characters weren’t developed enough, and the film moved too quickly from one scene to the next, leaving little room for emotional connection.
The new Mario movie is likely to follow a similar pattern as the first one, swapping the Mushroom Kingdom for a space-based journey through levels fans already know. Unless the filmmakers are careful, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie could end up with the same problems as before – a story that doesn’t go very deep.
The studio will likely get another opportunity to build on its success with Nintendo-based properties soon. Reports suggest Illumination is already working on a Donkey Kong spin-off, which could explain why we didn’t see a new Donkey Kong project this year.
