Sunrise Collective, a hub for people of Asian, Asian-American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander descent, is coming back to the heart of Park City’s downtown area, Main Street.
In collaboration with Daniel Dae Kim’s 3AD, Gold House and The Asian American Foundation (TAAF), the exclusive Sunrise Collective will be located at Pine Cone Ridge. This collective will bring together AANHPI (Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander) creatives, filmmakers, and influential industry figures for engaging discussions.
The following individuals will be part of the panel discussions: Tan France, Himesh Patel, Jim Sarbh, showrunners Nahnatchka Khan and Arika Lisanne Mittman, as well as various filmmakers whose projects are in this year’s competition such as Cherien Dabis, Amber Fares, Geeta Gandbhir, Glenn Kaino, Rohan Kanawade, Meera Menon, Tadashi Nakamura and Joseph Patel.
In the panel discussions, you’ll find Tan France, Himesh Patel, Jim Sarbh, showrunners Nahnatchka Khan and Arika Lisanne Mittman, alongside several filmmakers whose projects are in this year’s competition – Cherien Dabis, Amber Fares, Geeta Gandbhir, Glenn Kaino, Rohan Kanawade, Meera Menon, Tadashi Nakamura and Joseph Patel.
Speaking about current challenges facing the filmmaking community, Bing Chen, CEO and co-founder of Gold House, expressed that they’ve been significantly tested by both broad-scale political and economic changes as well as the destructive wildfires in Los Angeles. In these trying times, it is essential for us to continue our work in creating a welcoming, supportive, and interconnected environment. Chen further emphasized, “Independent narratives hold immense power in amplifying unheard voices, fostering new creative paths, and honoring our unique tales…Ultimately, our duty isn’t just about nurturing our community–we have a responsibility to foster holistic artistic innovation and collective cultural advancement.
Notable events include the Sunrise Collective and Sundance Institute’s Artist Accelerator Program, where they gather current and past artists for a private event to honor diversity in film and television. On the Saturday night schedule, the Sunrise Collective revives its annual Multicultural Dinner to salute the harmony of various voices and festival leaders. This year’s dinner is jointly presented by Onyx Collective, featuring the cast of Hulu’s upcoming “Deli Boys,” Asif Ali, Poorna Jagannathan, and Saagar Shaikh. The event will be hosted by Latinx House, GLAAD, MPAC, NALIP, MACRO, PEAK, 1497, and Disability Belongs.
Discussions, carefully moderated, will span a wide range of topics within the sector; the title “Amplifying New Stories: The Role of Media, Production Houses, and Personality in Amplifying Diversity” highlights how media coverage and public relations play a crucial part in boosting new and varied narratives across the industry. Similarly, the discussion titled “Can Music Move Mountains?” will delve into how filmmakers involved in music can inspire unity among people to join forces for a common objective.
Reflecting on the third year since the Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay shootings and the heartbreaking losses due to the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles, I’m deeply moved by the indomitable spirit and strength of our Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community. With Gold House and 3AD, we dreamt up Sunrise Collective as a sanctuary for AANHPI artists and individuals to unite, honor our vibrant heritage, and, above all, find comfort in one another during these challenging times.
Daniel Dae Kim, the CEO of 3AD, stated that their programming has been carefully selected to introduce fresh ideas, stimulate meaningful conversation, and acknowledge the growing diverse community gathering at this year’s festival. He expressed his gratitude towards Gold House, TAAF, and 3AD for collaborating yet again to recognize our history, appreciate the current moment, and invest in the future.
