Sundance: Surreal Fantasy ‘Obex’ Sells to Oscilloscope Laboratories (EXCLUSIVE)

As a movie critic, I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve just learned that Oscilloscope Laboratories has secured North American rights for the intriguing film “Obex,” which made its premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Directed by the talented Albert Birney of “Strawberry Mansion” fame, this surreal black-and-white fantasy was co-written with Pete Ohs, who also graced our screens in “Jethica.” Notably, Birney himself takes on a leading role in this captivating production.

The movie garnered much acclaim for its creativity and flair, as EbMaster deemed it both captivating and unique, going so far as to compare it to “I Saw the TV Glow.” The story revolves around Conor Marsh (Birney), a man who lives in isolation with his dog, Sandy. However, his solitary existence is disrupted when he starts playing Obex, an advanced computer game. When Sandy mysteriously disappears, the boundary between reality and game becomes indistinct, compelling Conor to delve into the enigmatic realm of Obex to find her.

The team responsible for creating “Obex” consists of Birney, Ohs, Emma Hannaway, and James Belfer, who is both the founder and CEO of production company Cartuna. This project marks Cartuna’s third collaboration with Birney, following their work on “Sylvio” and “Strawberry Mansion.” Similarly, Ley Line, famous for movies like “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “The Green Knight,” has also worked with Birney on “Strawberry Mansion.” In the movie, Callie Hernandez (“Under the Silver Lake”) and Frank Mosley (“Freeland”) share leading roles.

Apart from directing six movies, Birney not only contributed as an animator but also appeared in the critically acclaimed film “We’re All Going to the World’s Fair” at Sundance. Additionally, Birney has acted in another movie titled “I Saw the TV Glow,” which was also screened at the same festival.

For a long time, the distinctive and thought-provoking movies from Oscilloscope Laboratories have intrigued me,” Birney expressed. “Their discerning selection of films and commitment to amplifying independent voices really speak to me. Working with them on ‘Obex’ is truly an honor.

‘Obex’ is a mix of dreamy, nostalgic, scary, and impossible to categorize, according to Andrew Carlin, head of theatrical distribution at Oscilloscope Laboratories. It’s like an addictive 8-bit video game that gets stuck in your head. In short, we were utterly amazed by what Albert and his team achieved. This is raw filmmaking at its best. Releasing ‘Obex’ in theaters across North America next year is going to be one of our greatest pleasures.

Oscilloscope Laboratories has previously debuted films such as Lynne Ramsay’s “We Need to Talk About Kevin,” Kelly Reichardt’s “Wendy and Lucy,” and Matthew Rankin’s “Universal Language.” Notably, the latter received the first Audience Award at an independent section of Cannes. The movie will be screened in theaters starting this Friday.

The acquisition agreement for “Obex” was finalized between Aaron Katz, Vice President of Acquisitions at Oscilloscope Laboratories, and Lorna Lee Torres, Senior Vice President of Global Sales at Magnify, acting on behalf of the movie creators.

Magnify, a company responsible for handling worldwide sales, is marketing the movie at EFM (European Film Market). Meanwhile, Birney is represented by Fusion Entertainment.
