Despite the ongoing wildfires ravaging areas near Los Angeles, Sundance is set to proceed according to schedule.
Despite the film festival being held in Park City, a significant number of attendees like filmmakers, studio executives, and actors are traveling from Hollywood to this small ski town. Due to the destruction, several industry events scheduled in Los Angeles such as the Critics Choice Awards, BAFTA Tea Party, and announcements for SAG, WGA, and PGA nominations were either delayed or called off.
In Park City, where the film festival is being held, there’s a large influx of people like filmmakers, studio executives, and actors coming from Hollywood. Unfortunately, many events in Los Angeles that are significant to the industry such as the Critics Choice Awards, BAFTA Tea Party, and nomination announcements for SAG, WGA, and PGA have been either postponed or canceled due to the disaster.
In recent times, Amanda Kelso, acting CEO of Sundance, and festival director Eugene Hernandez have held numerous discussions with artists, volunteers, media representatives, trustees, sponsors, collaborators, and staff. They expressed their feelings in a statement, stating that the tragedies happening around are almost impossible to comprehend and evoke strong emotions. However, as we prepare for the Sundance Film Festival 2025 – which is only ten days away – we’re touched by the determination shown despite the heartbreaking circumstances.
I’m excited to share that from January 23rd through February 2nd, I will be attending the Sundance Film Festival. Among the premieres on this year’s schedule are several intriguing films. For instance, Bill Condon’s “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” an adaptation of the stage musical starring Diego Luna, Tonatiuh, and Jennifer Lopez. Another film that caught my eye is “Together” by Alison Brie and Dave Franco, a chilling horror story about a codependent couple on the verge of breaking point. Additionally, I’m looking forward to watching “Train Dreams,” starring Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones, and “The Wedding Banquet” by Andrew Ahn, a unique queer romantic comedy involving Bowen Yang and Lily Gladstone. It promises to be an unforgettable cinematic journey!
Currently, we might feel a sense of sorrow, but we’re aware that it’s crucial to move forward. In the near future, we’ll come together for Sundance’s 41st Film Festival to explore a fresh batch of films and filmmakers. Despite the difficulties many are facing, we’re diligently preparing for this year’s event. During times like these, our goal to aid artists, celebrate their work, and bridge communities is more vital than ever.
