It’s been tough sticking up for Kyle Cooke this season, and honestly, his behavior in this episode was indefensible. I like Kyle, but what he did was really messed up. After everyone came back from the club, he was DJing in the VIP area. Then Amanda went outside, and most of the group followed, relaxing by the hot tub. Kyle came outside with a speaker, trying to recapture everyone’s attention and get the party going again, but it didn’t land well. He accused Amanda of not being supportive, and when she tried to explain her side, he grabbed his speaker, went inside, and yelled an expletive at her.
It’s never okay to talk to your partner like that. My husband said something similar to me once during a fight, and I told him that if he ever said it again, I would leave him and publicly share embarrassing photos of him online – I even compared myself to the notoriously harsh celebrity blogger Perez Hilton. But Amanda, in this situation, handles it completely differently. She simply walks away, goes to the bathroom, and starts her bedtime routine, removing her makeup. It’s unsettling how calm she is, but also heartbreaking because she’s clearly been through this many times before, and it doesn’t even faze her. It makes me want to get her out of that situation immediately. She explained in a private interview that arguing is pointless because he never takes responsibility or apologizes. She knows his behavior is wrong, but she’s accepted that trying to talk it through won’t change anything.
West, Dr. Wilson’s son, is the true hero of this situation, and she has every reason to be proud. He checked on Amanda after her fight with Kyle, reassuring her that Kyle was the one who started it and comforting her when she was upset. When Kyle returned, West confronted him, pointing out his behavior and urging him to apologize. Kyle claimed Amanda had insulted him first, even suggesting she did so with just a look, which West dismissed as ridiculous. Kyle then accused Amanda of hating him and preferring time with friends, but West rightly pointed out that Kyle’s harsh words were likely the reason for her behavior. He even acknowledged Amanda deserved to relax and enjoy herself. Before leaving, West let Amanda know he loved her and was there if she needed anything. He’s a genuinely supportive friend, willing to stand up for her and challenge someone who’s acting badly. Despite his own flaws, West truly shines in this moment.
Kyle follows West’s advice and apologizes to Amanda, but immediately tries to excuse his behavior. The show attempts to explain Kyle’s perspective and highlights his struggling business. However, Ciara and others rightly point out that financial difficulties don’t justify speaking to Amanda that way. Kyle claims he’s now noticing Amanda’s critical comments, and the show includes flashbacks of her negative reactions to him. While he feels hurt by these moments, it still doesn’t excuse his harsh response to her – telling your partner “Fuck you” is never okay.
Kyle admits he struggles to explain himself and often focuses on small mistakes or outbursts when talking to Amanda, while ignoring the deeper issues in their relationship. He feels misunderstood and alone, and this is contributing to the tension not just between him and Amanda, but throughout the entire house. His attempts to cope with these feelings by acting out are only making things worse – it’s like trying to fix a painful problem with something that will only irritate it further.
By the end of the episode, it’s obvious that reality TV isn’t a good environment for building a healthy relationship. The constant arguing, like what we see between Amanda and Kyle, is a prime example. Everyone vents about their partner to friends – I definitely do! – but those conversations are usually private. Putting those disagreements on display, and adding the opinions of the public judging every move, just creates more stress. It’s what Ciara talked about last week – how outside opinions, especially regarding the public perception of her relationship with West, really hurt them both.
Let’s consider the show’s history and how power has shifted between Kyle and Amanda. Initially, Kyle was the established star, and Amanda was simply a girlfriend he brought onto the show. She had to compete for attention with him and the other cast members, likely feeling quite isolated. It even took a lengthy email from Kyle to get everyone to treat her better. For a long time, the show revolved around him, with Amanda playing a supporting role. However, things have changed recently. As Kyle has aged and Amanda has connected with the newer, younger cast members, the dynamic has flipped. Now, Kyle is the one who feels excluded and isolated – partly due to his own actions towards Amanda – and he likely resents losing his central position.
This isn’t meant to justify Kyle’s behavior towards Amanda, but rather to show how relationships on these shows are often destined to fail. We see a similar pattern with KJ and Dara. Lindsay, motivated by wanting to create drama for the show, questions KJ about his new relationship with Dara. She then shares a rumor from Bailey, claiming Dara was in Ben’s room for a long time and may have changed clothes while she was there. This information immediately causes KJ to become anxious and upset, as he’s naturally prone to worry.
He’s getting advice from two sources. First, Carl, who’s been through this before, warned him that dating someone in the house will inevitably become gossip, making it harder to build a genuine connection. Everyone will have an opinion, and it’s just too much noise. Then, KJ talked to Ciara and Mia, who helped him sort through his feelings and feel more confident. I really enjoy seeing their friendship develop – it feels like the bond he shares with his own sisters. It was really touching when Ciara said she’d do anything for him.
When KJ finally spoke with Dara, Dara denied anything happened, claiming she went into Ben’s room only to retrieve her suitcase and changed clothes while she was there. It’s a story that sounds plausible, but Bailey misinterpreted the situation, likely because so many people were watching. I’m anticipating a confrontation between Dara and Bailey when they next see each other. It’s classic Bailey – stirring up trouble even when she’s not present, which makes her perfect for Summer House.
As the previous issue gets sorted out, Carl’s observation about the house becoming overly involved in personal relationships resurfaces with Kyle and Amanda. This situation is unique because their arguments constantly unfold in front of everyone during meals, impacting the entire group. Ben, Jesse, West, and Ciara discuss the situation while relaxing, and Ciara voices what everyone has been thinking: Kyle and Amanda should probably go their separate ways. It’s tough to say, but considering everything that’s happened, it seems like the right conclusion.
All of this unfolds while Kyle is getting ready for his birthday party, which has an ‘old people’ theme. The costumes are fantastic – Kyle looks convincingly aged with hair sprouting from his ears and nose, a look even Johnny Knoxville would appreciate. West is hilarious as Mrs. Doubtfire, complete with a grey wig and frumpy outfit. Lindsay embodies a glamorous, bingo-loving senior citizen, and it’s hard to imagine that’s far from her personality! Mia fully commits to her role, even sporting lumpy padding that caught the attention of Michelle Visage. Ciara, known as the ‘Costume Queen,’ is aiming for another ‘Best Dressed’ award at the Bravos, returning as an elderly Karma Brown. Her costume is incredibly detailed, including a grey afro, oxygen mask, walker, and impressively realistic sagging features. It’s a spot-on, funny, creative, and inspired look – and honestly, no one can compete with Ciara when it comes to costumes.
With everyone dressed in playful costumes gathered around, Amanda proposes a toast: “To Summer House season 53!” She’s doing a fantastic job, everything is just right. It’s remarkable how focused and calm Amanda remains. Earlier, Lindsay praised her ability to separate her emotions from the situation, and you can see it in her expression. She’s directing everyone in the yard, giving instructions for Kyle’s party, while they all try to avoid acknowledging him and the drama from the night before. There’s Amanda, unpacking palm trees straight from the box. She carefully unfolds the fronds, adjusts the wires to keep them upright, and meticulously arranges each branch, striving for perfection. She seems to be creating a distraction, wanting everyone to focus on anything but her and her feelings. No one is openly confronting the situation; they’re simply lost in their own thoughts, imagining a relaxing escape – a gentle breeze, swaying palm trees, and the sound of the ocean. They’re dreaming of a cool drink and, most of all, the luxury of being completely alone.
