As a fellow film enthusiast who shares similar experiences with David Ayer, I wholeheartedly stand by his stance and support for James Gunn’s “Superman” and the expansion of the DC Universe. The passion and reverence he holds for these characters are not just professional but deeply personal, rooted in his own tumultuous childhood.
David Ayer has addressed the backlash over his endorsement of James Gunn’s forthcoming movie “Superman” and his plans to enrich the shared DC Universe on screen, in a recent statement.
Just before the upcoming “Superman” trailer release, Ayer spoke out about the continuous fan-led movement pushing for the release of his version of the 2016 film “Suicide Squad”. He urged fans to pause this effort, posting on X, “I didn’t know James was releasing ‘Creature Commandos’ when the last Ayer cut campaign surfaced…the new ‘Superman’ trailer is coming soon and I understand there are plans for another campaign for my take on the Squad.
Yesterday, I couldn’t help but express my enthusiasm as a filmmaker: “I can’t wait to back other filmmakers! The trailer for their upcoming project is said to be absolutely breathtaking, and I simply can’t wait to see it.” I also felt compelled to remind fellow fans not to overshadow the highly anticipated release of James Gunn’s Man of Steel project.
On December 18th, Ayer again voiced his opinion about the recent criticism towards his backing of Gunn and the restructured DC Studios, via X.
Dear Lord, if assisting another filmmaker is causing such controversy, I’m utterly bewildered at this moment,” he expressed on the social media site. “As a child, my life was filled with hardships. My dearest companions were comic books. They comforted me and provided company when no one else could.
The director revealed that Batman resonated deeply with him, and Superman’s optimism left a lasting impression. He firmly believed that the upcoming film by James would be outstanding. In truth, he was eagerly anticipating the trailer and the movie itself. He felt confident that it would excel, as the simple optimism of Superman seemed to permeate the project. At this moment, the child in him yearned for just such inspiration.
Later, he pondered if perhaps his unconventional viewpoint on the issue might have been misguided. He decided to temporarily withdraw from active participation, though it’s unclear whether this retreat applies to his social media presence or his involvement in the broader entertainment world.
Last year, Ayer discussed with Gunn the possibility of releasing a new cut of “Suicide Squad.“
Last year in August, Ayer expressed that his unreleased film surpasses the studio version in quality. The demand for his cut to be shown appears genuine and sincere. Gunn told him it would eventually be shared. Gunn should be able to introduce his DC Universe without further distractions from past projects. In a sense, I’m bound to this situation; I’m handling it as best I can while on this metaphorical tiger’s back. Life is an enigmatic adventure.
Additionally, Ayer made clear that his rendition of the feature would eventually surface. In an interview with “Total Film” in December 2023, the director expressed, “It’s on its way. Something significant is going to unfold. Some truth will be unveiled. The truth has a habit of emerging. It always does.
