Studio Scorecard: Netflix Leads Oscars With 16 Nominations

On Thursday, Netflix garnered the most Oscar nominations in the lead, primarily for “Emilia Pérez,” an emotionally resonant musical drama that blends various genres and tells the story of a former drug lord who transitions through gender-affirming surgery.

Emilia Pérez garnered a total of thirteen nominations, among them Best Picture, Best Actress for Karla Sofía Gascón, Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña, and Best Director for Jacques Audiard. The streaming platform was also recognized with nominations for “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” in the category of Best Animated Feature and for Pablo Larraín’s “Maria” in the category of Cinematography.

24 trailed closely in the award rankings with 14 nominations across various films such as Brady Corbet’s historical epic “The Brutalist” and Colman Domingo’s “Sing Sing”. “The Brutalist” matched with “Wicked”, each receiving ten nominations. The studio behind “Wicked”, Universal, garnered 13 nominations, while its subsidiary, Focus Features, earned 12 for the papal drama “Conclave” and director Robert Eggers’ reimagining of “Nosferatu”. Despite Universal accumulating a total of 25 nominations, more than Netflix, the Academy separates its awards based on distributor alone.

Here’s the complete rundown of the Academy Awards nominees. This year’s event, marking its 97th edition, will be hosted by Conan O’Brien and is scheduled to broadcast live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 2nd.
