Students in China are using smart glasses to cheat on tests, with answers displayed directly on the lenses.
Smart glasses have become increasingly popular in recent years. Some models focus on everyday features like recording video, making calls, and playing audio, while others are packed with artificial intelligence to assist with tasks like cooking and navigating while traveling.
Smart glasses are raising worries about security and privacy, particularly because people may be filmed without realizing it. There are even reports that sensitive, private footage could be reviewed by real people, potentially including recordings of personal moments.
So, I was reading that in China, some students are actually using smart glasses to cheat on tests! Apparently, they’re using them to look up answers while they’re taking the exam. It’s pretty wild, and a little scary if you think about it.
Smart glasses being rented to students to cheat on tests
According to a Rest of World report based on interviews with users, Vivian, a university student in Hebei, explained that the glasses focused on areas where she might struggle. She said, “It really highlighted any subject I might fail at.”
I was really surprised to hear this student – though her name isn’t Vivian, apparently – was using those Rokid AI glasses for all sorts of things! She even told us she’d scan price tags on clothes with them to quickly check if she could find a better deal somewhere else. It’s pretty clever, honestly!
She’s also been renting the glasses to other students to help them do better on tests.

According to a recent report, renting out people is now a surprising and growing trend, with some individuals using these ‘rentals’ to take their English and Math tests for them. One entrepreneur claims to have provided these services to over 1,000 students in the past four months.
Although students aren’t allowed to use smart glasses during important exams, teachers don’t always check for them. This means some students are able to use the glasses to get answers from AI during tests.
A wider crackdown would likely need to take place to prevent the cheating.
