Answer to “Some mammals get ready to [blank] around now” in Cookie Jam
This shouldn’t be too difficult – most of us covered this in school – but longer words sometimes trip me up. Fortunately, we don’t need to consider the whole alphabet, which simplifies things. So, here’s the solution:
- Some mammals get ready to ____ around now – Hibernate
It’s a common misconception that all mammals hibernate during winter; it’s actually just one of several strategies animals employ to endure cold temperatures and limited food availability. Smaller mammals – such as bats, hedgehogs, and ground squirrels – have fast metabolisms and aren’t able to build up sufficient fat reserves to remain active. Hibernation is the most effective method for these creatures to conserve energy.
Larger animals, such as deer, wolves, and moose, are better at retaining body heat and generally have access to enough food to survive, so they remain active throughout the winter. In warmer climates, certain species don’t hibernate at all because they can still find food and shelter.
Many animals prepare for winter in different ways – some travel to warmer places, others save up food, and some grow a heavier coat of fur. Bears are unique: they don’t experience a deep, full hibernation the way groundhogs do. Instead, they go into a state called torpor, which is a less intense sleep where their bodies slow down, but they can still be roused if bothered.
