Streets of Rage Movie Update From John Wick Creator Is Bad News

The video game-to-movie adaptation of Streets of Rage, which was highly anticipated and being developed with the help of Derek Kolstad (creator of John Wick), is now facing potential problems according to recent news.

Derek Kolstad says Street of Rage project is “actively inactive”

Derek Kolstad, the writer behind the planned Streets of Rage movie, recently shared some discouraging news: the project is currently on hold. He described it as ‘actively inactive,’ meaning it’s stalled like many Hollywood films despite ongoing development. While the movie is still with Lionsgate, there hasn’t been much progress lately, according to Screenrant.

Derek Kolstad still feels strongly about a script he wrote, describing it as “such a cool script” that he dedicated a lot of time to. He hasn’t received any recent updates on the project, but remains enthusiastic. Kolstad envisions the script as a blend of the realistic suspense of ’16 Blocks’ and the non-stop action of ‘The Raid,’ creating a relentlessly paced story that doesn’t offer much breathing room after the first few pages. He explained that, from page 17 onwards, the action is constant until the very end.

The project gained attention in 2022 when Lionsgate acquired it from the team behind the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. Writer Derek Kolstad initially developed the script independently, before any studio agreement was in place. His enthusiasm helped get the project noticed, but it’s still in the early stages of development. It’s based on Sega’s popular Streets of Rage video game series.

Players find themselves in a dangerous city controlled by the villain Mr. X. They play as everyday heroes like Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding, battling groups of enemies in classic side-scrolling fights. The series has always had a dedicated fanbase, and that support grew even stronger with the release of Streets of Rage 4.
