Streaming Charts Prove That Superhero Fatigue Is a Myth

If anyone thinks people are getting tired of superhero stories, they might be surprised to check their streaming services. Many superhero movies and shows are currently at the top of the charts on various platforms, including new releases from DC and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Data from FlixPatrol shows that HBO Max, Disney+, and Prime Video are currently leading in streaming popularity with their own content. Superman, James Gunn’s first big movie for the DCU, is the most-watched movie on HBO Max, and season two of Peacemaker is the second most popular TV show. On Prime Video, the spinoff series Gen V, a continuation of The Boys, is the No. 1 show, beating out other hits like the teen drama The Summer I Turned Pretty and the action-packed prequel The Terminal List: Dark Wolf.

However, Disney+ is where superheroes are really proving their lasting appeal. Marvel Zombies, an animated miniseries rated TV-MA and set in a different version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe where Earth has been overrun by zombies, is currently the most-watched show on Disney+. The show’s popularity is such that “[Marvel Zombies co-creator and director] Bryan [Andrews] and I are constantly brainstorming ideas within the Marvel universe. There’s a wealth of history and countless stories to explore. If viewers subscribe to Disney Plus and enjoy this show, we might get the chance to tell them,” explained executive producer Brad Winderbaum.

On Disney+’s list of the Top 10 Movies, the newest Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Thunderbolts* (also known as The New Avengers), continues to do very well, currently holding the No. 3 spot. The other two superhero movies in the Top 10 are both from Pixar’s Incredibles franchise, with Incredibles 2, directed by Brad Bird, and the original The Incredibles at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.

The Superhero Box Office Could Rise in 2026

Recently, critics and box office experts have been talking about “superhero fatigue,” mainly because movies in this genre aren’t performing as well at the box office as they used to. In the 2010s, superhero films seemed unstoppable, with even less famous characters like Captain Marvel, Black Panther, and the Guardians of the Galaxy becoming huge hits. But the COVID-19 pandemic really hurt movie theaters, and the superhero genre hasn’t bounced back as strongly as other types of films have since theaters reopened.

Looking ahead to 2026, several major superhero films are scheduled for release, most notably the eagerly awaited Avengers: Doomsday. This crossover event will bring Robert Downey Jr. back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom, after a brief, uncredited appearance in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. In addition, Marvel Studios is planning a fourth solo Spider-Man movie next summer. The film is already generating excitement, with positive reactions to the new Spider-Man suit, the realistic web-slinging effects, and the cast. Fans are especially pleased with Michael Mando reprising his role as Scorpion.

At DC Studios, the Superman spinoff film Supergirl, featuring Milly Alcock, is coming soon. The movie is based on the 2022 comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King. It tells the story of 21-year-old Kara Zor-El’s journey across the galaxy with Krypto, where she encounters a girl named Ruthye and embarks on a violent path of vengeance. Ana Nogueira wrote the screenplay adaptation. DC will also be releasing another project, which promises a more terrifying superhero experience for viewers.
