Stranger Things viral “parents’ warning” claims Season 5 opens with “graphic” abuse scene

The first part of Stranger Things Season 5 is out now, and while fans are generally excited, some online are interpreting the opening scene with Vecna and Will as showing “graphic” child abuse. However, that interpretation isn’t quite right.

The first few minutes of the new season of the popular Netflix show connect directly to the events of Season 1. Using special effects to make actor Noah Schnapp look younger, the show revisits when his character, Will Byers, was originally trapped in the Upside Down.

Will is discovered hiding in Castle Byers, and quickly finds himself battling a Demogorgon. After escaping, he falls from a tree and is knocked unconscious. While he’s out, he’s brought before Vecna, revealing Vecna has been the mastermind behind everything happening in Stranger Things all along.

A surprising discussion has started, sparked by political activist Jack Posobiec, about what will happen next. Please be aware that the following information may be upsetting to some.

On Thursday, November 27th, Posobiec posted on X, warning parents that the new season of Stranger Things opens with a disturbing scene depicting the sexual assault of a child by an adult.

The troubling part happens when Vecna connects a vine to Will’s mouth and forces a strange substance down his throat, permanently connecting him to the Upside Down.

There’s nothing to suggest the Duffer brothers meant for this scene to be interpreted as a metaphor for sexual assault, nor have they ever described it that way.

It’s well known that Stranger Things draws heavily from the movie Alien, and a recent scene clearly references the iconic facehugger attack. Interestingly, the creators of Alien intentionally used several scenes as symbolic representations of sexual encounters or assault.

Screenwriter Dan O’Bannon, in an interview for the Alien Quadrilogy DVD, explained his approach to unsettling audiences: he deliberately used sexual themes to disturb them.

He stated he would focus his attacks on the men in the audience, intending to shock them with disturbing and sexually explicit imagery. He described using visuals designed to be deeply offensive, including references to homosexual acts and a graphic, disturbing image of something laying eggs in a person’s throat.

H.R. Giger, a special effects artist, frequently incorporated disturbing imagery of bodily harm and invasion into his work for the sci-fi series.

Okay, so yeah, Stranger Things definitely takes inspiration from movies like Alien and other classic sci-fi – you can totally see it. But the show never says it’s trying to copy those films, and honestly, Netflix or the creators, the Duffer brothers, have never hinted that a certain scene was supposed to be about sexual abuse or anything like that. It’s just been interpreted that way by some people, but it wasn’t the intention.

While the content is certainly shocking and unsettling, any sexual meaning is open to interpretation. This is likely why a post by Posobiec – which has gained significant attention with over 630,000 views – now includes a clarifying note from the platform’s community.

The claim that a young child is sexually assaulted in a graphic scene in the first episode of Stranger Things Season 5 is false and entirely fabricated.

Fans respond to Alien interpretation 

Many viewers disagreed with Posobiec’s statement, leaving hundreds of comments pointing out its inaccuracies. One viewer simply asked, “I watched it and the whole series – what exactly are you claiming?”

Honestly, I was really confused by that accusation. There was absolutely nothing – not even a hint – of anything inappropriate, let alone anything involving child abuse or even sexual content. I genuinely have no idea what led someone to think that, and I’m actually asking what they saw that made them say that.

One person said they watched it and disagreed with the initial assessment. They explained the creature, which is central to the show, actually drains the life from those it attacks, much like the creature in the Alien movies. Another person countered that wasn’t true, and found the idea strange.

Okay, so someone else jumped in and totally disagreed, saying my explanation was way off. They explained that Will wasn’t doing anything, he was actually captured by Vecna, who then made him swallow these weird particles from the Upside Down through a tube. They were super adamant that it wasn’t sexual at all, and honestly, they said I was the one with the problem if I thought it was!

Despite this, many of his fans appreciated the warning. One person commented, “Thanks for letting us know! I had just started letting my kids watch because it’s rated PG-13, not R. I’m surprised it isn’t rated R!”

Posobiec followed up with more tweets, sharing a response from Grok. He highlighted that the creators of the movie ‘Alien’ described the infamous facehugger scene – which a moment in ‘Stranger Things’ references – as portraying a sexual assault.

As a big fan of the film, I’ve read a lot about its creation, and it’s pretty disturbing to learn that writer Dan O’Bannon described a key scene as ‘homosexual oral rape.’ Even more unsettling is discovering that H.R. Giger’s incredible designs were actually rooted in a fear of sexual assault. It definitely changes how you look at the visuals, knowing that dark origin.

He just dropped this image with a simple “Oh,” and it’s totally blown up in the comments! People are realizing this is actually the team behind Alien talking about Alien – it’s wild!

One person pointed out that stretching the meaning to connect it to rape feels like a forced interpretation. They explained the show simply draws inspiration from 80s science fiction and horror movies. They also added that while there are real issues like the normalization of pedophilia to be concerned about, overreacting isn’t helpful.

Someone else pointed out that it wasn’t the same Jack, and while his work on Alien was different, the Stranger Things scene isn’t about sex or pregnancy. It’s focused on an underground world and a shared consciousness. They felt the criticism missed the point of the story, which is a classic battle between good and evil.
