Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for the Stranger Things season 5 finale.
The final season of Stranger Things revealed a surprising twist: Henry Creel, also known as One and Vecna, wasn’t the original creator of the Mind Flayer. Instead, he was manipulated by it before he even went to the Upside Down. For a long time, Stranger Things left many questions unanswered. The first season introduced viewers to the mysterious Upside Down, Eleven’s incredible abilities, and the terrifying Demogorgon.
That was just the start of things. The Mind Flayer quickly entered the conflict, unleashing his Demodogs and causing widespread destruction in Hawkins. Now, after a long wait, season 4 of Stranger Things finally provides the answers fans have been looking for. Before the season premiered, the creators, the Duffer Brothers, repeatedly promised a season full of revelations, and they definitely delivered.
The fifth season’s finale finally revealed how the show’s villains, Vecna and the Mind Flayer, were connected. Earlier, in season four, Dustin guessed that Vecna was the Mind Flayer’s right-hand man. The finale confirmed this theory, showing that Vecna was indeed the Mind Flayer’s most powerful subordinate.
Okay, so the backstory on Vecna is getting really interesting. Apparently, his connection to the Mind Flayer goes way back – even before he ever set foot in the Upside Down. As a kid, he found a scientist in a cave, and when he touched this weird rock – a piece of another dimension, according to the Stranger Things play The First Shadow – that’s when the Mind Flayer started reaching out to him. It’s wild to think about how long ago that connection started forming! It really adds layers to his villainy.
Dr. Brenner explains that when Vecna kills someone, he absorbs their mind and abilities. Before becoming Vecna, as Henry/One, he collaborated with the Mind Flayer, gaining its powers and ultimately becoming more powerful and able to control the Upside Down.
What Powers The Mind Flayer Gave Vecna
Before Henry Creel was known as One, he already possessed abilities that allowed him to read minds and inflict harm by exploiting people’s deepest, most painful memories. This is what initially caught Dr. Brenner’s attention, especially after Henry killed his own mother and sister. However, even with these powers, there were limitations to what he could achieve.
Although his psychic abilities were helpful, reconnecting with the Mind Flayer after being exiled from Hawkins Lab pulled him back into a dark, nightmarish realm. He felt he’d finally broken free from his inner restraints and embraced a predatory nature. The frightened child who once hid in a cave had transformed into the terrifying killer known as Vecna.
In season 4 of Stranger Things, Henry Creel connected with the Mind Flayer’s central consciousness, which transformed him into Vecna. This connection gave him control over creatures like Demobats, Demodogs, and Demogorgons in both the Upside Down and the real world, but the Mind Flayer was actually the one pulling the strings.
Why The Mind Flayer Looks Like A Spider
It’s notable that Henry Creel remained captivated by spiders throughout his life. This could be why, when the Mind Flayer manifested before him, it appeared as a massive spider. Though originally a being of pure shadow, the Mind Flayer took on the form of a giant spider in Henry’s perception.
This clarifies why young Henry, while living with the Creels, became fixated on sketching this creature. Giving the Mind Flayer a spider-like form suited its powers and overall design.
The spiders in the Creel house were mostly black widows, known for their painful bites – a pain similar to what Will Byers experienced during his attack. Interestingly, the effects of a black widow bite usually last around seven days, the same duration as Vecna’s curse.
Although different from how the Mind Flayer targeted Will in season 2, the monster’s method of attacking, biting, and infecting victims is similar to what we saw in season 3.
Why Vecna Used The Mind Flayer In Stranger Things Seasons 2 & 3
If Vecna has been the one pulling the strings all along, it’s strange he didn’t strike at Hawkins sooner. The creatures from the first two seasons of Stranger Things – the Demogorgon and the Mind Flayer – seemed to be distractions, meant to take over the town, but Eleven managed to defeat them both.
After Eleven defeated the Demogorgon and closed the gate to the Mind Flayer, Vecna found a way around her power by creating the Mind Flayer in the real world. He then weakened Eleven by having the creature bite her, which likely caused her to lose her abilities at the end of season 3 and the start of season 4.
After Vecna gained some of Eleven’s abilities, he could reach into people’s minds across different dimensions. He used this power to kill them from the Upside Down, creating new gateways in the process. Essentially, Vecna wouldn’t have been able to do any of this without Eleven’s powers.
Once the Mind Flayer’s initial plan fell apart, it found a different role. Interestingly, even after being removed from Will Byers, it left a lasting connection with him. This means Will remains linked to Vecna, though the monster isn’t aware of it.
Stranger Things Season 5 Reveals Henry’s First Encounter With The Mind Flayer & Power Origins
During the final showdown, Holly Wheeler saved the kids by hiding in a cave Vecna was scared to go into. But Vecna overcame his fear and entered the cave, revealing the complete memory hidden inside.
I remember hearing about a time when the young Henry faced a really frightening encounter. Apparently, he met a scientist who became convinced Henry was going to steal this strange steel case he had. The scientist got so panicked that he actually threatened Henry’s life, and tragically, Henry had to defend himself when the scientist pulled a gun. It was a terrible situation, but he had no choice but to act in self-defense.
The most surprising discovery in the Stranger Things finale was what was inside the case, and how it impacted young Henry. When Henry opened it, he found a glowing, dark stone with red lines running through it. The stone quickly fused with his hand.

When the stone entered Henry’s blood, he saw a vision of the Mind Flayer, who looked like a spider, and was instructed to find it. This vision confirms the Mind Flayer existed long before Henry, even though the flashbacks in season 4 suggested Vecna – and therefore the Mind Flayer – had a more recent origin.
This reveals that Henry was unknowingly a pawn of the Mind Flayer, not its master. It’s ironic that Vecna’s plan for Stranger Things season 5 focused on manipulating children, considering he himself was once a child being manipulated by the Mind Flayer.
How Vecna Was Using The Mind Flayer In The Abyss
Okay, so it’s become clear that Vecna actually used the Mind Flayer to create the Abyss and the Upside Down – we got hints of this in the season 4 flashbacks. I originally thought Henry was just banished there and built it all himself, but the season 5 finale totally flipped that around! It turns out the flashbacks were misleading and Vecna had a lot more help than we realized.
The Abyss wasn’t created by Henry; it already existed and was the source of the Mind Flayer’s connection to him, reaching out even when he was a child. As the Mind Flayer gained control, Henry essentially merged with it, and he then used the creature as a living, thinking base within the Abyss.
Henry, now known as Vecna, lived within the Mind Flayer, hidden deep inside the creature as its tendrils drained the life from those it held captive. The Mind Flayer served as Vecna’s armor and a powerful weapon, which he unleashed against the heroes in the final battle of Stranger Things season 5.
Who Was The True Villain In Stranger Things?
Even though Henry didn’t fully make amends in the final episode, he showed he was a pawn of the Mind Flayer, not its master. This confirmed he wasn’t the real villain, leaving audiences wondering who truly pulled the strings.
Some believe the Mind Flayer is the real villain of the show, as it’s an ancient, otherworldly being. Unlike other villains, it doesn’t have a sad past or any understandable reason for its actions – it doesn’t seem human at all. However, we don’t know how long it existed in its own world, or if what it does is truly evil, or just a way to protect itself.
Ultimately, Dr. Brenner is the real villain of Stranger Things. His reckless experiments were what first opened the gateway to the Upside Down. He’s responsible for introducing Henry to the Mind Flayer, and his cruel treatment of the boy is what turned him into Vecna. When Eleven showed more promise, Brenner simply tried to get rid of Henry.
