Stranger Things Star Debuts Pizza Movie, a New Sci-Fi Comedy Dominating Hulu

Forget about breath mints – pizza is the real solution! It’s a strange thing to say, and honestly, I never expected to write it, but after watching Pizza Movie, it just makes sense. Who knew things could change so quickly?

Now that Stranger Things has finished, many of the show’s popular actors are starting new projects. Gaten Matarazzo, who played Dustin Henderson, is one of them, and he’s starring in a movie called Pizza Movie.

Critics generally loved the new Disney-Hulu movie, giving it an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s quickly become popular with viewers too, ranking among the five most-streamed films on Hulu and Disney+.

PIzza Movie Is Stranger Than Some Things

So, where to begin in describing this film?

Okay, so if you’re expecting another Stranger Things, forget it. This movie is deliberately different, and that’s exactly what Gaten Matarazzo was going for – a chance to show off a different side of his talents. He’s joined by Sean Giambrone and Lulu Wilson, and the three of them have incredible chemistry. They really play off each other’s unique personalities in Pizza Movie, and it’s honestly a joy to watch.

Jack and Montgomery are college students dealing with the classic rivalry between nerds and popular kids. They eventually decide to stop worrying about it and just have fun, even though Montgomery was initially very against the idea.

Okay, so picture this: my two favorite quirky college students find this random box of mints in their dorm. No one claims them, which is already weird, but then they find a video with it promising an absolutely wild experience if they eat one. Naturally, they give in to temptation and pop one in!

Can Pizza Movie Become a Cult Classic?

People quickly start experiencing vivid hallucinations, losing touch with reality. They only discover, by rewatching the video, that the key to avoiding a terrible ordeal (including a rather unpleasant threat involving a chainsaw) is to eat pizza while using the mints.

This kicks off a frantic race to grab a piece of the action, and they’ll do whatever it takes to get it fast. But things quickly become much harder than expected – with exploding heads, a pursuing butterfly, and being devoured by a cartoon octopus that somehow sends them to a confusing, possibly fake, alternate universe.

Pizza Movie aims for the same kind of funny, mind-bending experience as cult comedy favorites like Half Baked, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, Pineapple Express, and This Is The End—but it takes a uniquely odd and unexpected approach.
