The fifth season of *Stranger Things* will conclude the main story, but the creators are working on a spin-off series. Recently, Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators of the show, revealed some unfortunate news about when fans can expect the spin-off to come out.
What is the Stranger Things spin-off show release date update?
In a recent interview with Variety, the creators of the show, the Duffer Brothers, said they are taking a measured approach to developing the spin-off. They haven’t announced when it will be released or when filming will begin.
Details about the spin-off are still being kept secret. However, Matt has stated that it won’t overly complicate the show’s already complex backstory after Season 5. While the new series will be set in a different location, it will still have connections to the original Stranger Things.
I’m so excited about the Stranger Things spin-off, but the Duffer Brothers are being super secretive about the story! Honestly, even Shawn Levy, who directs and produces the show, doesn’t know what they’ve planned. They’re really keeping everyone guessing!
Levy explained that the creators have been careful about discussing potential spin-offs, as they’re very protective of the core ‘Stranger Things’ story. He’s enthusiastic about continuing the show’s narrative, but doesn’t want to overhype it by calling it a ‘universe.’ He jokingly predicted someone would immediately start using the abbreviation ‘STU’ to refer to any potential spin-offs.
How does Netflix feel about the Duffers’ slow approach to the spin-off?
Matt said Netflix has been remarkably understanding throughout the show’s run, but he believes their patience is starting to fade now that the series is ending.
Bela Bajaria, who leads creative efforts at Netflix, has stated that there’s no set date for when the spin-off will begin production.
According to Variety, Netflix’s Bejaria stated they are eager for more seasons of ‘Stranger Things’ and will move forward with production as soon as the creators are prepared.
The Duffer Brothers have moved to Paramount in a new, profitable agreement, which means they’re no longer working exclusively with Netflix. While they’ll still have a significant creative role in the upcoming spin-off series, they won’t be the lead showrunners.
Ross said they’re hoping to write and direct a new project soon and will be actively involved in its development.
The first four episodes of Netflix’s Stranger Things Season 5 stream globally on November 26, 2025.
