Stranger Things Season 5’s Will Byers monologue took two 12-hour days to film, Noah Schnapp says

Noah Schnapp shared that filming Will Byers’ deeply emotional monologue in Stranger Things Season 5, Episode 7, “The Bridge,” was incredibly challenging. The scene has quickly become a standout and much-talked-about moment from the final season.

This episode features Will finally revealing his true self to his friends, a development that had been hinted at throughout several seasons of Stranger Things. The episode received varied reactions from viewers, and the scene immediately sparked a lot of discussion online.

Noah Schnapp, who has been playing Will since the show started in 2016, recently told Variety that filming the emotional monologue actually took a surprisingly long time.

Filming Will’s monologue took two 12-hour days

Schnapp explained that filming the coming-out scene took two full 12-hour days, and the schedule was almost entirely dedicated to shooting Will’s emotional speech.

He said they filmed the monologue for what felt like forever. It took a full 12-hour day, and even then, they weren’t finished. They had to return a week later and spend another 12 hours reshooting parts of it.

Finn Wolfhard shared that the longer filming schedule allowed him to experiment with his character’s emotions and avoid being stuck with just one interpretation. He also mentioned the scene had far more lines than any he’d previously performed on the show, so he spent months getting ready for it.

The actor also thanked Maya Hawke for helping him with memorization. She advised him to learn his lines early, focusing on the words themselves first, and letting the emotions develop naturally when they started filming.

Honestly, even though it was a really long shoot, the whole cast stuck it out – Winona Ryder and all of us younger actors were there for each other the entire time, even when we weren’t actively filming scenes. It was cool to see everyone so dedicated.

Instead of relaxing in Video Village or taking a break, the cast stayed in their designated seats all day, which Schnapp said made the experience truly memorable.

Noah Schnapp shared that he’d anticipated Will’s coming-out scene for a while, and he regularly spoke with the show’s creators, the Duffer brothers, during filming. When he finally read the finished scene, he was deeply moved and thought it was exactly right, saying he didn’t want to change a thing.
