This year marks the end of the popular Netflix series Stranger Things, though the final story will unfold in three parts. The first set of episodes will be released right before Thanksgiving, followed by another set on Christmas, and the series will conclude on New Year’s Eve. Splitting the fourth season into parts wasn’t a huge success, even though the story was a big step up from Season 3. However, the creators, the Duffer Brothers, believe they’ve crafted a compelling cliffhanger to keep fans engaged until the very end.
The latest season of Stranger Things continues the show’s pattern of dividing the characters into smaller groups, but this time, they’re more united. The fifth and final season picks up 18 months after a catastrophic event devastated Hawkins. It’s now fall 1987, and the town is under strict military quarantine, making it nearly impossible to leave. The group has been secretly exploring the Upside Down to locate Vecna, unaware that he’s been hiding in plain sight, disguised as a friendly figure named Mr. Whatsit to Holly Wheeler. In the fourth episode of Season 5, titled “Sorcerer,” the search for Holly intensifies alongside a mission to rescue Vecna’s other victims.
Eleven and Hopper Discover Dr. Kay’s Secret Weapon
Season 5 features a new villain, Dr. Kay, who now leads Hawkins. After the military took over the town to protect the world from the Upside Down, Dr. Kay has been researching the alternate dimension and its creatures. Her research involves capturing these creatures, and she’s currently holding one that Eleven believes might even be Vecna himself.
Even with the extreme dangers of the Upside Down, Dr. Kay has established a military base there, using a strange creature’s power to weaken Eleven – essentially her biggest vulnerability. Dr. Kay wrongly thinks Eleven is responsible for all the trouble in Hawkins, including attacks on children and Holly’s disappearance. In Season 5, Episode 4, Hopper and Eleven infiltrate the base to defeat this creature, giving Eleven a chance to fully utilize her abilities. And surprisingly, viewers actually see Eleven fly!
Trouble starts when Dr. Kay uses sirens to disrupt Eleven’s powers, effectively stopping her. With Eleven unable to use her abilities, Hopper seemingly sacrifices himself to destroy what he and Eleven believe is Vecna. This emotional farewell has become a recurring part of each Stranger Things season. However, the person Dr. Kay was actually holding captive isn’t Vecna – it’s Kali, Eleven’s sister figure from Season 2. After a long wait, the mystery surrounding Kali’s fate is finally going to be revealed.
So, Steve and the gang are, predictably, in another tight spot! After slamming into that massive wall in the Upside Down, they somehow managed to get in touch with Hopper and Eleven just before those guys busted into the military base. It looks like Nancy, Steve, Jonathan, and Dustin are okay for the moment, but honestly, they’re probably going to be waiting ages for anyone to come rescue them, and Nancy is definitely not thrilled about that.
Max and Holly Team Up to Escape Vecna’s Mind
He’s been secretly working on a plan to conquer the world and eliminate humankind. Children are key to his scheme because he believes they’re easily manipulated and can be turned into whatever he wants. He starts by targeting Holly, gaining her trust by pretending to protect her from monsters – monsters he actually created himself.
The group currently believes Holly is somehow connected to the barrier Vecna created, but the situation is surprisingly complex. After Vecna kidnaps Holly – almost killing Ted and Karen Wheeler – he imprisons her within his memories at the Creel house, the site of his family’s murder. Holly only discovers Henry’s true, evil nature when she finds Max in the woods.
Max leads Holly to a cave that Vecna avoids, likely because it holds a painful memory for him. It’s revealed that since Vecna killed and Eleven resurrected her, Max has been lost within his mind, forced to experience his past. She briefly found a way out when she recognized Lucas playing her favorite song, Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill,” but the music stopped, and she was pulled back in. Now, she’s resigned to her situation and has made the cave her refuge.
Will has a disturbing vision of Holly, seeing her tangled in vines with something in her mouth – a scene that echoes his own experience when Joyce and Hopper rescued him in Season 1. But because Will also saw other children in the vision, it’s unclear if this is where Holly actually is, or if it’s just a mental image Vecna is showing him – a projection, rather than reality.
Will Learns the Truth About Himself From Vecna
The central mystery revolves around Will’s strange visions. Throughout the season, he begins seeing things from the perspectives of Holly, Derek (another of Vecna’s victims), and even the demogorgons. Initially, it’s believed Will is connected to the collective consciousness Vecna is building, and there’s some truth to that. However, Will isn’t actually entering the minds of these individuals – he’s experiencing things within Vecna’s mind. Because Vecna has the ability to invade thoughts, Will has developed a similar power.
As a huge fan, I was on the edge of my seat when Will discovered he could figure out who Vecna was targeting next! He teamed up with Joyce, Mike, Lucas, Robin, Erica, Murray, and even Derek, and they almost managed to save a bunch of kids from the same awful fate Vecna suffered when he was young. Unfortunately, their plan hit a snag. While they were trying to sneak the kids out of the military zone in Hawkins through the tunnels, a pipe burst, alerting the soldiers and getting everyone arrested. To make things even worse, Vecna figured out where they were hiding the kids and sent demogorgons to snatch them and take them to the Upside Down! It was so frustrating to watch!
Vecna encounters a vulnerable Will, who is suffering from the Demogorgon’s pain. He reveals he targeted Will first because he saw him as the weakest link, the easiest person to break. Surprisingly, Vecna doesn’t kill Will, instead suggesting they’ll work together, implying he needs Will alive to achieve his goals. However, he has no such reservations about the others, resurrecting the Demogorgons to attack Mike, Robin, and Lucas.
When Will’s best friend is threatened, something inside him awakens – a strength he always possessed but couldn’t access. We see flashbacks to happy childhood memories: becoming friends with Mike, building a fort, and creating art for his family. He remembers a conversation with Robin that touched on his difficulty accepting his feelings and his unrequited love for Mike, and this inspires him to find inner strength and self-love before confronting the danger threatening his friends.
How Does Stranger Things Set Up the Final Episodes?
The first part of the final season of Stranger Things concludes with Will bleeding from his nose. Although the group didn’t win this fight, they did gain two potential new allies. However, finding him will be the real challenge.
While the team’s growing strength is encouraging, it’s also pushing Vecna to become even more powerful. We’ve still seen glimpses of scenes from the trailers – like Lucas carrying Max through a demogorgon-filled hospital, and a heartfelt embrace between Nancy and Jonathan – suggesting Vecna is no longer holding back. He realizes Eleven isn’t the only one who can oppose him, and he’s responding accordingly.
After watching the first four episodes, it’s natural to wonder who might die. Steve and Hopper have always seemed like likely candidates, given their roles as protectors. However, the show previously tricked us into thinking Hopper was gone, so killing him off for real might feel repetitive. While Steve’s story so far doesn’t suggest immediate danger, he’s still a strong possibility.
Right now, Nancy seems like the most likely character to be killed off. She’s become a strong leader this season, driven by the trauma of her sister’s kidnapping and her parents’ near-death experiences. Interestingly, she’s been portrayed as the ‘final girl’ since the beginning, so killing her would be a surprising twist. The show’s creators have hinted at a major, unexpected event in the final season, and that could very well involve Nancy, as she’s central to many characters’ emotional journeys.
The first part of Stranger Things Season 5 is available to watch on Netflix now. The second part will be released on December 25th, and the very last episode of the series will premiere on December 31st.
