Stranger Things Season 5 trailer hidden detail supports secret villain theory

The latest trailer for Stranger Things Season 5 has a lot going on, and it’s easy to miss a quick scene that might be hinting at a new villain – possibly one even more frightening than Vecna.

The fifth and final episode of the popular Netflix series brings the Hawkins group back together, determined to defeat Vecna. Their mission won’t be simple, though, as the town is now under military lockdown.

With the government closing in on Eleven, she’s been forced to go into hiding again. Meanwhile, the location of Vecna remains a mystery. Now, everyone’s speculating about what will happen next – and who might not survive.

While Vecna seemed to be the ultimate villain in Stranger Things, some fans believe there’s an even more powerful threat hinted at throughout the series: Thessalhydra.

Stranger Things Season 5 trailer may be hiding secret villain

Many fans believe Thessalhydra, a monster from Dungeons & Dragons, will be the big bad in season five. They noticed a trailer clip showing four D&D miniatures in front of Mike, and one of them appears to be the multi-headed Thessalhydra.

Man, remember the end of Season 1? Eleven finally saved us all from that Demogorgon, and thankfully, Will was back safe. It was such a relief seeing him get back to normal, even if ‘normal’ meant settling down for a D&D session with Mike, Lucas, and Dustin. That scene always gets me!

Mike explains that the group is being attacked by Thessalhydra, and Will manages to defeat it using a fireball. Considering how the game has mirrored the characters’ personal struggles, it’s surprising this monster hadn’t shown up before now.

We’ve seen clues before, like the painting Will made for Mike in Season 4. It depicted the group battling a dragon with multiple heads.

The trailer for Stranger Things Season 5 again features Dungeons & Dragons, with Eleven letting Mike know that the current situation is far more serious than one of his game sessions.

Despite everything, Mike and his friends are still using Dungeons & Dragons to figure out their strategy. A quick scene shows him rallying the group, declaring, “We’re going to finish this, together.”

Fans have noticed a striking resemblance between the central figure in the new trailer and the character Thessalhydra. One excited fan shared their observation on X (formerly Twitter), exclaiming, “No one is talking about this, but look at the table!”

We’ve got all our Dungeons & Dragons miniatures set up – the player characters and, oddly enough, a miniature of the Thessalhydra right in the center! It looks like we’re definitely going to be battling that dragon this season!

Someone called William Byers a ‘prophet’ and shared a picture of his artwork, suggesting it predicted the name of the Spider Monster. Another fan theorized that if the Thessalhydra appears, that’s what people will call it.

Someone else suggested that Vecna adapts and learns from what happens to him, so he’s likely overcome his weakness to fire. They believe the upcoming fireball attack will probably target a Demogorgon or Thessalhydra instead.
