Okay, so there’s been this huge mystery surrounding Vecna, the bad guy in Stranger Things, since he showed up. But finally, after a massive reveal at the end of episode 4 in season 5, we finally know the answer to what’s been bugging everyone!
The first part of Stranger Things 5, Episodes 1-4, is now available on Netflix, and it quickly caused a surge in viewers. These episodes are bringing the story closer to its conclusion.
The latest episodes introduced a mysterious new character, Mr. Watsit, included a quick nod to a famous Christmas story, and showcased music by artists like Michael Jackson, ABBA, and the popular Kate Bush.
The season culminated in a massive confrontation near the Hawkins lab, where Will Byers battled Vecna and a long-standing mystery was finally revealed. Be warned: spoilers follow…
Why does Vecna target children in Stranger Things?

Okay, so it’s become super clear now – Vecna’s been targeting the kids of Hawkins since the beginning, messing with their heads and bodies. And the reason? He thinks they’re vulnerable and easy to control. It’s messed up, but that’s his whole deal – finding people he can break and remake in his image.
In the final moments of Episode 4, he lifts Will into the air, holds him there, and then reveals his motivations and how he operates.
William, do you see the children? Do you understand why I’ve chosen them? It’s because they’re vulnerable – physically and mentally. They’re easily broken, easily molded, and easily controlled. They are exactly what I need.
To make things even worse, Vecna revealed to Byers that Byers’ easily influenced mind sparked the idea for his powers. He explained, “You were the first, and it was so easy to break you. You showed me what I could do—how to take control of minds that simply don’t belong in this world, but in mine instead.”
How Vecna wins the trust of Hawkins’ kids in Season 5

Jamie Campbell Bower, who plays Vecna, revealed that the villain uses the alias “Mr. Watsit” to gain the trust of those he targets. He shared in an interview with Deadline that the name is a reference to a character from Madeleine L’Engle’s novel, A Wrinkle in Time.
Campbell Bower described Vecna’s current persona as a highly polished and sophisticated version of himself. He explained that the character’s style was heavily inspired by Mr. Whatsit from ‘A Wrinkle in Time’.
The actor also found inspiration in a surprising place: Mr. Rogers. He admired how Rogers interacted with children, and that approach even influenced his portrayal of characters like the Pied Piper of Hamelin.
I found that story particularly inspiring when developing this character. I aimed for a warm and approachable personality, something that would make them feel comfortable and at ease. It’s a bit unsettling, honestly, but I hope it allows them to do what they need to – which is pretty awful when you consider it.
