Maya Hawke and Noah Schnapp, stars of Stranger Things, have shared their thoughts on what many fans are calling the best new duo in the show’s final season. Stranger Things is famous for creating surprising and beloved pairings – a great example is Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) and Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo), who became close friends starting in season 2.
I’m really excited about Will Byers’s journey in the final season of Stranger Things! It’s amazing to see him finally embrace his powers and grow as a person. And I absolutely love that he’s finding support and connection with Robin Buckley. As the only main LGBTQ+ characters on the show, their friendship feels natural and it’s honestly been one of my favorite parts of the season so far. It’s just so heartwarming to see them connect!
Filming the fifth season of Stranger Things was a particularly special experience for the cast. In a recent interview with Netflix’s TUDUM, Maya Hawke and Noah Schnapp talked about their time working together and how their growing friendship is reflected in their characters, Robin and Will. Hawke explained to TUDUM that he sees a parallel between his own relationship with Schnapp and the way Robin guides and supports Will, feeling a personal responsibility to help Noah as an actor.
She explained that his personality truly comes into its own this season, helping Robin feel less isolated and more valuable. Considering how strongly Robin believes in and accepts Will – which is key to his powerful confrontation in Stranger Things season 5, episode 4, “Chapter Four: Sorcerer” – it’s clear Robin is a vital asset this season.
A particularly moving moment this season is when Robin shares with Will how her feelings for the hilariously bad singer, Tammy Thompson, helped her learn to accept herself. This resonated with Maya Hawke, who was deeply affected by filming the scene, as Will has been grappling with self-acceptance throughout the series.
She explained that if the scene worked at all, it was entirely due to Noah, who was fully engaged and emotionally open, giving her a lot to respond to as an actress.
Finn Wolfhard, who plays Will Byers, shared that he had a ‘work crush’ on his co-star Maya Hawke (Robin) and enjoyed working with her this season. He told TUDUM that their chemistry on set mirrored the connection between their characters. ‘I’ve always had a work crush on Maya Hawke and really wanted to work with her,’ he explained.

I’ve always admired her work on the show and really hoped we’d have a chance to act together. I finally got that opportunity this season when the scripts came out, and we had several episodes focused on our characters. I was really looking forward to filming those scenes with her.
He shared that working with her was a wonderful experience, and she helped him grow a lot as an actor. He described her as becoming a sister figure to him, and he noted that their on-screen and off-screen relationship felt very similar. He really looked up to her, and she guided him throughout the year they worked together.
Schnapp believes the characters’ positive relationship is a key part of Will’s journey. He explained that it was vital for Will to meet Robin, someone confident in who she is, so she could share her experiences and help him understand himself better.
The show Stranger Things consistently demonstrates the unwavering love and support Joyce (Winona Ryder) and Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) have for Will. They’ve proven they would do anything for him, and a particularly touching conversation between Will and Jonathan in season 4 was crucial to Will’s process of accepting himself.
Despite everything, Robin truly understands what Will is going through, and their connection has been a bright spot during a really scary time. As always, Stranger Things shows that its best quality is the relationships between its characters and how they support each other, especially now that they’re facing a potential apocalypse.
The second part of Stranger Things season 5 arrives on Netflix December 25th, with the final episode dropping on December 31st.
