As the release of Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 1 approaches in just a couple of weeks, fan theories about the show’s ending are rapidly circulating. Some believe the title of the final episode reveals how the story will conclude.
Okay, let’s be real – right now, everything we’re hearing about how the show ends is just fan theories and guesses. Even the actors probably don’t have the full picture of where their characters will end up in the fifth and final season! It’s all still up in the air, which is both exciting and a little nerve-wracking as a fan.
Noah Schnapp, who plays Will on the show, recently told Entertainment Weekly that he cried while watching episodes 5 and 6, calling them “so good.” He also revealed that the show’s creators aren’t letting the cast see the finale beforehand, so he’ll be watching it with everyone else for the first time.
Since the creators of Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer, enjoy surprising viewers, we won’t know the show’s true ending until the final episode airs on New Year’s Eve 2025. Until then, fans are busy making their own guesses about what will happen.
Stranger Things Season 5 finale title could reveal ending

Okay, so I just watched the first episode of Stranger Things Season 5, and everyone’s talking about how it might end. The title of Episode 8, ‘The Rightside Up,’ is getting a lot of attention because it could mean we’re actually getting a happy ending after all this! It’s definitely fueling the theory that things will wrap up positively for everyone.
If you’re curious about the symbolism, the name hints at a fan theory: Eleven will eventually replace Vecna as the leader of the Upside Down and reshape it into a better world – essentially, making it like our own.
The theory, originally proposed three years ago, suggests that as long as Eleven exists in our dimension, the Upside Down and its monsters will continue to break through. Essentially, she acts as a gateway to the Upside Down, much like a powerful sorcerer in Dungeons & Dragons.
Her presence creates ongoing problems, meaning a truly happy, normal life with Mike isn’t possible. She’s fundamentally changed things, and as long as she exists, things will never return to the way they were.
The explanation for the Upside Down’s look is that it’s shaped by the minds and feelings of those who enter it. When 001 was there, it was a barren place, but after Will was taken, it started to resemble Hawkins as it was in 1983.

They explained that as long as people with these magical abilities are born, disturbances from the Upside Down will continue to threaten Hawkins and the rest of the world.
Instead of Eleven losing her powers and living a normal life, the story should end with her becoming a guide and mentor to others.
Now that new children are being born with the ability to enter the Upside Down, she can reach out to them and guide them towards using their powers for good. She’s made a firm decision to avoid the path of villainy that was taken by 001 and 008.
I believe this idea is key to resolving the story and providing a satisfying conclusion. It allows Mike to accept he can’t be with Eleven and ultimately, to mature as a person.
Fans were particularly intrigued by the title of the Season 5 finale, ‘The Rightside Up,’ when the episode titles were announced. Many believe it suggests a positive conclusion for the show, with one fan stating it ‘confirms that Stranger Things 5 has a happy ending.’
It’s possible “Rightside Up” simply means things will return to normal. But many fans believe the ending will be much more unsettling.
One Reddit user shared a theory that Eleven will likely die, believing the hints at the end of Season 4 suggest this outcome. They feel it would provide the most impactful emotional conclusion to the series.
If the show simply has her raise her hand and defeat Vecna, saving everyone except the new characters, it would feel very similar to the ending of Season 4 – and that wouldn’t be a satisfying conclusion. Just having the kids defeat Vecna without a truly challenging and risky battle wouldn’t be very compelling.
People are worried Steve might die, but many believe Eleven’s death would be even more shocking, as it feels like the showrunners wouldn’t actually go that far with her character.

Someone else commented that they initially believed Eleven was destined to die. However, they pointed out her story is more similar to Harry Potter – a character who makes a sacrifice – than a character simply meant to be killed off.
I believe she’s the main hero, and the story will likely end with her confronting the mind flayer. This final battle will probably cost her her powers permanently, as it will require an incredible amount of strength and determination to defeat it.
They believe she’ll no longer pose a danger, and the military will likely agree to leave her alone to live peacefully. While it’s not entirely impossible someone might try to harm her, it’s not expected.
The first part of Stranger Things Season 5 will be available on Netflix starting November 26th. While you wait, you can explore fan theories about Barb, predictions on which characters might not survive, and our list of the best episodes from the series.
