Stranger Things’ Natalia Dyer Insisted On One Condition For Nancy’s Ending

Be warned: the following contains spoilers for the final episode of Stranger Things season 5. Natalia Dyer insisted on one specific detail for her character, Nancy Wheeler’s, ending. After a touching breakup with Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton) and a key part in the defeat of Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) and the Mind Flayer, Nancy shares in the series finale that she left Emerson College to pursue a job at the Boston Herald.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Natalia Dyer explained she strongly felt her character, Nancy, shouldn’t be in school anymore, as that didn’t align with where she envisioned the character going. She told showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer this, and they discussed with all the actors how they wanted their characters’ stories to conclude. You can read Dyer’s full comments below.

I was really firm about not wanting Nancy to go back to school, and the Duffer brothers were great about getting my input. They’d check in with all of us actors, asking what we thought and where we saw our characters going. For me, it just didn’t feel right for Nancy to be back in a school setting after everything she’d experienced. I really pleaded with them, and I was so relieved when I read the ending and saw that they’d agreed. It felt perfect for Nancy, and I was really happy with how her story concluded. It’s tough, because you become so invested in these characters and want the best for them, but it also needed to feel realistic. I think everyone was pleased with how it all turned out.

Ross explained that he believes Nancy’s storyline makes sense, as she’s clearly become more self-reliant and is still figuring out her path in life and what she wants.

Jonathan, Steve, and Robin were all surprised to learn Nancy hadn’t gone to college, but they completely understood and admired her choice. They knew she often did things her own way to follow her heart.

Nancy’s brave choice to risk herself in the final battle against the Mind Flayer really shows how much she’s grown since the beginning of Stranger Things. In the first season, she was mostly focused on school and her relationship with Steve.

Originally, this character probably would have continued her studies at Emerson. However, by the series’ end, she’s evolved into a confident, independent journalist who’s outgrown the college experience. Pursuing a career at a major newspaper feels like a much better fit for her now, rather than finishing school.

Okay, so I was a little sad to see Nancy’s part in the main Stranger Things story wrap up, but I’m SO excited to hear she’s not gone for good! Apparently, she’ll be appearing in the new animated spinoff, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85. I saw her in the trailer, and it looks like she’ll actually have a pretty important role. It’s set between seasons 2 and 3, so it’ll be cool to see what she was up to then!

On December 2nd, a new book called Stranger Things: One Way or Another: A Nancy Wheeler Mystery was released. It follows Nancy and Robin as they solve a mystery that takes place between the fourth and fifth seasons of the show. The events in the book support Nancy’s choice to pursue a career in journalism at the Boston Herald and quickly start working in the field.
