The latest season of Stranger Things premiered last month, and it’s wrapping up its story in the 1980s with a final set of episodes coming in December. The show is typically very careful to avoid errors that wouldn’t fit the time period, but a recent scene featured an older Nintendo game that didn’t actually come out until later, creating a noticeable mistake.
As Time Extension pointed out, a character named Derek Turnbow (played by Jake Connelly) was shown playing the classic arcade game Ghosts ‘n Goblins, originally released by Capcom in 1985, despite the scene suggesting he was playing the NES version.
I’m a big fan of Stranger Things, but Season 5 made a noticeable mistake. A character is shown playing a ‘Nintendo’ game, but the game on the TV is actually the arcade version of Ghosts ’n Goblins, not the version for the original Nintendo Entertainment System. As someone who loves retro games, it really bothered me!

It’s understandable how someone unfamiliar with the 1980s might not realize this was an error. However, it’s also possible the arcade version of Ghosts ‘n Goblins was intentionally used because it looks visually superior to other versions of the game.
To demonstrate, this is what the NES port looks like:
The original Nintendo console was enjoyable for its time, but the graphics weren’t as sharp as those found in arcade games. Arcade versions also generally had superior music and sound.
This mistake isn’t as noticeable as some other on-screen errors, like the coffee cup accidentally left in a scene of Game of Thrones or the recent issue with the streaming service HBO Max including crew members in shots from Mad Men. Netflix probably won’t even address or correct this error in the show Ghosts ‘n Ghouls.
Earlier this year, Wizards of the Coast combined Dungeons & Dragons with the world of Stranger Things to create a role-playing game. Plus, the characters from Stranger Things are now available in Fortnite.
The first part of Stranger Things Season 5 is now available on Netflix. The second part will be released on Christmas, and the very last episode will premiere on December 31st. Fans can also watch the finale in certain movie theaters on that same day.
