A recent documentary has shared an unexpected fact about how the final season of Stranger Things wrapped up. In One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5, the show’s creators, the Duffer Brothers, explained they began filming the finale without a completely finished script. Filming on the finale concluded last month, marking the end of the show’s complex and emotional story.
Stranger Things’ finale didn’t have a finished script when its filming began
Matt Duffer, speaking about the making of Stranger Things 5, revealed they started filming before the final episode was fully written. He described it as a nerve-wracking situation, explaining that he and his brother, Ross, along with the entire team, were determined to get the finale right, as it was the most crucial script of the season.
Matt remembers the production team and Netflix really pushing him and Ross to finish the finale. He said it was the hardest writing experience they’d ever had, not just because the script needed to be good, but also because of all the outside interference and demands happening at once.
Matt mentioned the finale took the most time and effort with the writers. He explained that carefully crafting each scene and staying true to the show’s core values had always been their successful approach.
Matt explained they already knew how the story would end, saying everything had been planned in advance. He just needed to write it, but they were running out of time. Interestingly, Montana Maniscalco revealed in the documentary that they were still working on episode 8 and hadn’t finalized the script, meaning they didn’t even know all the details themselves.
Matt confessed to the crew that he hadn’t even reviewed Episode 8 before they started filming it. He admitted it was a strange experience, saying, “I’ve never done anything like this before… jumping to eight is so weird. I really don’t like it.”
As a huge fan, I’m thrilled all five seasons of Stranger Things are now available on Netflix! It’s amazing to see what the Duffer Brothers created – they weren’t just the minds behind the show, but also producers, working alongside people like Shawn Levy, Iain Paterson, and Curtis Gwinn to bring it all to life.
