Stranger Things Finale: Duffer Brothers Wanted Ambiguous Ending

The final episode of Stranger Things left viewers with some unanswered questions, a result the creators, the Duffer Brothers, intentionally aimed for. After nearly ten years, the hugely popular Netflix series concluded on New Year’s Eve with a feature-length finale lasting over two hours.

The show concluded some storylines neatly, but left others, such as what will happen to Eleven, open-ended for viewers to decide for themselves.

Martina Radwan, the director of the upcoming documentary One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5, recently told Variety that the show’s creators expected fans to have a range of reactions to the final season.

Radwan claimed that a lot of modern movies and shows “tell you what to think and how to feel.

Unlike many shows that tie up all loose ends, Stranger Things left viewers with unanswered questions, which surprised and even frustrated some fans who were hoping for a clear resolution. According to Radwan, this was likely intentional. “I think the Duffer Brothers wanted that reaction – the sense of uncertainty,” he explained.

The filmmaker thinks that fans’ initial reactions to the finale will change with time, as they reflect on it later. Ultimately, Radwan is confident that most fans actually enjoyed the ending of Stranger Things, even if it was unexpected at first.

It seems like audiences enjoyed the ending, but it definitely left them with a lot to think about. Unlike many modern films that spell everything out, this ending is deliberately open to interpretation, and that’s exactly what the creators, the Duffers, were aiming for. It’s not immediately clear what happened, and viewers are left to draw their own conclusions. The impact of the ending will likely evolve over time as people reflect on it beyond their initial reaction. The Duffers wanted to create a sense of mystery and encourage discussion, and it sounds like they succeeded.

Wadwan was present for the entire filming of Stranger Things season 5, starting with the initial read-through with the actors and continuing until the final scene was completed.

She went to a New York movie theater to watch the series finale with other fans, wanting to share that special moment as a group. “I really loved the finale,” she said.

I absolutely loved the finale! I watched it in a movie theater here in New York City, near Union Square, and it was amazing to experience it with a crowd. Seeing everyone react and applaud together made it really special.

A major point of discussion after the finale centered on Eleven’s fate. It seemed she sacrificed herself to defeat Vecna, but Mike Wheeler suggested a possible scenario where she survived. This has sparked a lot of online debate about whether Eleven is truly dead or alive.

Radwan isn’t sure what happened to Eleven on the show, but she’s intrigued by the possibility that magic is gone, or needed to disappear. However, the idea that magic still exists within people—as hinted in Mike’s storyline—has given some fans hope that Eleven is still alive.

I find it interesting to think about magic disappearing, or needing to disappear. But it also feels like a part of us still holds onto it, so I’m really not sure what to believe.

The way Eleven’s story ended was a major source of frustration for many viewers of the finale. While characters like Joyce and Hopper found happiness – with their engagement – and some of the kids prepared for college, Eleven, who has faced a lot of hardship, didn’t receive a satisfying conclusion.

Some viewers disliked the final season and believe its ending, among other things, proved the creators didn’t finish the show well. However, other fans found the conclusion satisfying, even with some unanswered questions.

As Radwan pointed out, the creators of the show anticipated these reactions and aren’t bothered that some viewers are struggling with the ending. Just like in real life, not every problem has a clean solution. Even though Stranger Things is a show about supernatural creatures, it remained true to its core by reflecting the complexities of life.

One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5 will be released Monday, January 12 on Netflix.
