Okay, so I just finished watching the Stranger Things documentary, ‘One Last Adventure’, and it was seriously fascinating. It goes behind the scenes of Season 5, and finally explains why we didn’t see any Demogorgons in that huge fight in The Abyss. Just a heads up though – major spoilers are coming if you haven’t seen it yet!
Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators of Stranger Things, have said the show’s final battle was heavily influenced by the video game Baldur’s Gate 3. Specifically, they took inspiration from how the game handles characters dealing with their own problems and then uniting to work as a team.
The group battles a massive, spider-like creature called the Mind Flayer, and the conflict culminates in Joyce severing Vecna’s head.
Demogorgons don’t appear in the final battle, and the creators, the Duffer brothers, recently explained why they made that choice…
Why are Demogorgons missing from the final Stranger Things battle?

The Demogorgon didn’t appear in the final battle of Stranger Things because the show’s creators felt the monster had been overused and wanted to avoid tiring viewers.
In the documentary One Last Adventure, Matt and Ross, along with their writing team, discussed the plot of The Abyss. Matt highlighted that the most innovative element would be a massive monster.
The group considers how fast the creature is, realizing it could easily escape the teenagers. They also want to see more monsters in the story, like Demogorgons, bats, or dogs.
Matt explained the intensity of the MAC-Z, emphasizing it was incredibly dramatic. He attributed this to the fact that six Demos were attacking at the same time, creating a peak moment of action.
Kate Trefry, a writer and co-executive producer, shared, “I think I’m starting to wonder if people are getting tired of demos.”

Ross acknowledged the point, agreeing it was reasonable, and then emphasized how tiring the whole thing was. With that, the decision was made: they wouldn’t include Demogorgons in the final battle.
In a recent Variety interview, director Martina Radwan discussed a particular scene, noting she appreciated the dialogue and how it evolved. She found the writers’ room process especially interesting, as it showed the creative thinking behind the story.
As a fan, I really loved how confidently everyone talked about the Demogorgons in the final Abyss scene—except Ross, who threw in that little doubt about ‘Demogorgon fatigue,’ and Kate backed him up! It was a great moment because it instantly showed this wasn’t the end of the discussion; they clearly had some things to figure out. The filmmakers intentionally left it ambiguous because, by the time the documentary came out, everyone already knew the Demos weren’t actually in the Pain Tree.
Stranger Things nearly featured a field of Demogorgon eggs

The Duffer Brothers also told ScreenRant that the Demogorgons’ initial effectiveness relied heavily on the element of surprise.
Matt Duffer explains that Vecna was completely surprised by the attack on his base. He never thought it would happen, and the heroes must be hiding nearby. While they considered adding another monster fight on top of the battle with the Mind Flayer, the writers decided it made more sense for the Mind Flayer – a massive creature already – to handle any smaller threats instead.
He’s decided to handle this situation on his own, without calling in his forces. This planet is huge and empty. As you might remember from Season 4, Henry explored it and spotted a Demo in the distance, but they aren’t living in a large, established civilization. There aren’t any towns or settlements of Demos up there.

Initially, there was discussion about a massive field filled with Demogorgon eggs, but that idea didn’t make it into the show, according to Ross Duffer.
We once considered having a scene where the characters discovered a huge field of Demo eggs, similar to the movie ‘Aliens,’ but ultimately, not every idea makes it into the final product.
