Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators of Stranger Things, have firmly ruled out any future shows featuring the original characters, describing such a project as a cynical attempt to make more money.
The final episode of Stranger Things, titled ‘The Rightside Up,’ premiered on Netflix on December 31, 2025, bringing a close to the story of the characters we’ve followed for ten years. While the Stranger Things universe may continue, this marked the end of this particular group’s journey.
Okay, so yeah, there are a few side projects happening – like a cartoon show with some familiar faces – but mostly, the people behind the game are really excited to start working on something completely fresh. They’re not just sticking with what’s already popular, they want to try new things!
When asked about potentially returning to Hawkins with the original characters in the future – perhaps ten years later – the Duffer Brothers dismissed the idea, calling it a simple attempt to make more money.
Okay, so fair warning: I’m about to talk about the ending of Stranger Things season four, and I’m going to spoil everything! If you haven’t finished watching it yet and want to go in fresh, seriously, stop reading now. I don’t want to ruin the surprises for you!
Don’t expect a Stranger Things sequel series anytime soon
The Duffer Brothers, creators of Stranger Things, recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the upcoming Season 5. When asked if they would consider revisiting the story with a sequel set in the future—perhaps checking in with the characters ten years later—they addressed the possibility.
“We really don’t know,” Matt responded, before explaining how the closing moments of the finale intended to close the book on these characters once and for all.
He explained they were definitively ending the storyline. That’s why the closing credits were designed the way they were – to clearly signal that this was the final chapter for the characters, including Mike, Eleven, Joyce, and Hopper.
Currently, even though other stories set in the Stranger Things universe are being developed with the Duffer brothers involved, they don’t intend to continue the adventures of the original group of characters.
At its heart, the show is a story about growing up. The moment Mike shuts the basement door symbolizes him leaving childhood behind and stepping into adulthood.
When discussing potential storylines for a sequel, Matt playfully suggested ideas like seeing Hopper as a grandfather or the kids dealing with midlife crises, but ultimately admitted those concepts didn’t seem very appealing.
“I don’t know how that would read as anything but a gross cash grab to me.”
While the creators aren’t currently planning any more stories, they haven’t ruled out the possibility of revisiting the original Stranger Things characters in the future. If a compelling idea arises, a reunion isn’t out of the question, but for now, the story is finished.
The brothers are much more interested in creating new characters and a fresh story world.
