Matt and Ross Duffer, creators of “Stranger Things” on Netflix, have been predominantly busy filming the concluding season throughout most of last year. Now that production has come to an end, it’s difficult for them not to experience a blend of emotions.
Ross Duffer stated it was indeed a sad farewell in December,” he said. “We won’t continue telling our story with these characters, that team or those actors any longer. We were all drained, yet at the same time, we had to take some moments to grieve over saying goodbye to it.
The pair will pause for a brief contemplation while receiving the EbMaster Showrunner Award during the SCAD TVfest. “We rarely receive awards like this,” Matt Duffer notes, “so we are deeply appreciative that it’s happening.
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I’m diving headfirst back into post-production work. This phase is going to consume a significant portion of my year. Currently, we’re focusing on editing all the visual effects sequences for our show, ensuring they are ready for the team to start working on them. The aim is to have these sequences running smoothly in time for a scheduled release. That’s what Matt, my fellow filmmaker, shared with me.
As for when you can expect it, there’s still a bit of uncertainty regarding specific release dates and frequency, he explains. That’s one reason why I can’t disclose details about it at the moment. We have a call scheduled in around two weeks to discuss it further. All I can say is that it’s crucial for us and Netflix to make it available this year, but even that deadline is quite ambitious.
There’s plenty left to accomplish before viewers can watch the fifth installment of “Stranger Things” and discover the final outcomes for the group from Hawkins, as well as the ultimate destiny of the Upside Down.
Ross clarifies they’re pushing their limits to complete the work, understanding that it’s been almost three years since our favorite young characters were last seen. “Even with Season 4, we worked right up to the edge. We were still adding visual effects shots a day after release! So this year, we hope to be more on schedule… it’s just that now we’re facing another steep climb as we approach finally wrapping up this project.
Instead of “Wait, don’t you mean ‘Running Up That Hill’?”, you could rephrase it as: “Isn’t that song ‘Running Up That Hill’ by Kate Bush? It gained unexpected popularity in 2022 due to its appearance in Season 4, and now the Duffers are pondering which moment in Season 5 might create another cultural sensation.
Matt explains, “It’s not something that can be produced artificially.” He continues, “Attempting to create it would likely result in failure. I found the episode featuring Kate Bush intriguing, and I’m a big fan of her work. However, I didn’t anticipate it striking a chord with Generation Z specifically. But that’s one of the enjoyable aspects of releasing content – you never know what will catch on. Typically, our excitement about something from the Kate Bush angle comes as a surprise. I’m certain this pattern will repeat itself. The charm lies in putting it out there and watching it do things we don’t always expect.
In the meantime, this duo, who have divided their time between their Los Angeles residence and their Atlanta workbase for the past ten years, are eager to revisit Georgia to accept their award. “It’s felt like a second home for us,” he explains. “The team has been outstanding. The city itself holds great significance for us. Beyond the people, it’s an exceptional location in terms of the resources we can access and transform into Hawkins, Indiana.
After the “Stranger Things” finale, the Duffers find themselves in a new phase of their lives, wondering what’s next and how it will compare to their nine-year-long project. Fortunately, they can currently concentrate on editing, which helps keep such thoughts at bay, though they are certain these concerns will surface eventually.
