Be warned, the following contains spoilers for the fifth and final season of Stranger Things. Instead of a huge, action-packed battle, the series finale brought the characters back to the place where their story started. While the season featured many monsters, including the demogorgon, fans noticed that particular creature didn’t appear in the final episode. According to creators Matt and Ross Duffer, this was intentional. Vecna was so surprised by the attack that he didn’t have time to order his monsters to defend themselves.
While speaking with The Wrap, Matt Duffer detailed:
Vecna was completely caught off guard by this attack on his own territory – he never anticipated it. The heroes are still hidden somewhere. We talked about having Vecna use demogorgons in the fight, on top of battling the Mind Flayer, but it felt more logical for Vecna to handle this threat himself, considering the Mind Flayer is already such a massive opponent. He doesn’t need to rely on smaller creatures when he can confront it directly. The planet is vast and empty, as we saw with Henry’s journey in Season 4. He did spot a single demogorgon in the distance, but they aren’t living in settlements or forming a large civilization up there.
Keeping ‘Stranger Things’ Fans on Their Toes

As the Duffer brothers prepared to end the show, which first aired in 2016, they faced a tough challenge: giving fans what they wanted in the final episodes without simply retreading old ground. They considered bringing back demogorgons for the finale, but decided against it, feeling the creatures had already been featured too heavily in the preceding episodes.
Matt Duffer expressed:
We also discussed demo fatigue – feeling like we’d explored that storyline fully in the ‘Sorcerer’ episode. We wanted to refocus on Vecna and the Mind Flayer, as they haven’t been prominently featured this season.
Throughout its run, Stranger Things successfully honored classic science fiction stories without simply copying them. The show’s creators have revealed they almost directly paid tribute to a well-known film from the 1980s by James Cameron.
The Duffer brothers once planned a scene where the characters would discover a massive field of Demogorgon eggs, similar to a moment in the movie Aliens. However, they ultimately decided it didn’t fit into the final story. As Ross Duffer mentioned, the idea ended up being part of an extended, unwritten three-hour version of the finale.
