I was fascinated to hear that Ross Duffer, one of the creators of Stranger Things, recently shared where they found inspiration for Season 5! Apparently, a really important moment involving Vecna’s comeback was directly influenced by Star Wars. It’s amazing to think about those two worlds connecting in that way, and I’m even more excited to see how it plays out on screen!
Ross Duffer on how Star Wars inspired one scene in Stranger Things Season 5
Ross Duffer, one of the creators of Stranger Things, revealed that a specific scene in Season 5 was inspired by Star Wars. He based Vecna’s dramatic entrance through the MAC-Z gate on how Darth Vader appears in the film Rogue One. Duffer explained they wanted Vecna’s arrival to be a truly impactful moment, and modeled it after Rogue One to immediately establish his power and how frightening he is.
At the end of the first volume, Will begins to control the powers he gained from his link to Vecna. The show’s creators, the Duffer brothers, considered early on how Will could use this connection to fight their enemies. In a key moment, he psychically defeats the Demogorgons, drawing strength from his memories of Castle Byers and his friend Mike. This marks a significant development for Will’s character.
The season’s storyline heavily focuses on Will’s development. According to Ross Duffer, bringing the story back to Will felt natural, as he was the character originally taken in the first season, completing a narrative circle. Matt Duffer explained they wanted Will to mature as a person and reach his full potential, which would then unlock powerful abilities.
Noah Schnapp said Will’s showdown with Vecna felt like a dream, and he enjoyed playing a version of Will who was confident and assertive. The scene shows Will raising his hand to access his powers, a move that started as an idea based on Eleven’s signature hand gesture, but was later changed.
Noah Schnapp clarified that the shift in Will’s character represents him regaining control from Vecna. Gaten Matarazzo believes Will’s developing powers significantly alter the story, and Finn Wolfhard jokingly suggested they now have ‘two Elevens’.
