Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Stranger Things season 5, episode 8
Most fans of Stranger Things would agree that Steve “The Hair” Harrington (Joe Keery) was the last character they wanted to see go. Although there was a scary moment, the way the show wrapped up Steve’s story in the final season was truly satisfying.
After five seasons, it’s obvious the creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, knew how much fans adored Steve Harrington. They skillfully used this affection throughout the series, and the finale ultimately delivered a satisfying conclusion to his storyline.
Stranger Things’ Series Finale Nearly Killed Off Steve On The Radio Tower
As a huge fan of Stranger Things, I always felt like the whole radio tower scene at the start of the final episodes was designed to make us believe Steve was a goner. It was a really clever way to build the tension and make his fate seem sealed, even if it was a misdirect!
When Steve fell from the platform, the screen immediately cut to black, creating a shocking and upsetting moment for anyone who was worried about him.
But then Jonathan Byers quickly grabs Steve’s arm, pulling him to safety. This moment is clearly the Duffer Brothers intentionally toying with viewers’ feelings, and it works really well.
Stranger Things Found A Fitting Fate For Steve Harrington
The Duffer brothers initially led viewers to believe Steve was in danger, but they redeemed themselves by giving his character, Harrington, a remarkably positive outcome in the final episode of Stranger Things – arguably one of the best endings for anyone in the show.
The final scenes, set a year and a half after the defeat of Vecna, the Mind Flayer, and the Upside Down, show Steve has taken on two surprising new roles. He’s now a little league coach – with Derek Turnbow as one of his players! – and, comically, the school’s sex education teacher.
We learn that Steve remains close to Dustin, even going on a road trip with him. He also intends to keep in touch with Nancy, Jonathan, and Robin, and ultimately decides to make Hawkins his home.

He hinted he’s found someone special – a woman named Kristen – and might be thinking about having children someday, even mentioning he’d love to have “six little nuggets.”
It’s really rewarding to see Steve make it through Stranger Things and end up with a bright future, especially considering how much he’s grown since the beginning. It even makes the show’s creators’ earlier attempt to mislead us about his fate a little easier to accept.
All episodes of Stranger Things 5 are now streaming on Netflix.
