Stowaway fox travels 3,000 miles from England to New York on cargo ship

A fox accidentally traveled thousands of miles from England to New York after hiding on a cargo ship. The animal took an unplanned journey across the Atlantic Ocean.

A fox unexpectedly turned up on a ship that arrived at the Port of New York and New Jersey after traveling from Southampton, England, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society.

Authorities discovered a roughly two-year-old male fox, weighing around 11 pounds, concealed within the ship’s cargo.

After the ship docked in New York City, customs officials with United States Customs and Border Protection took the fox into their care. They then coordinated with the Bronx Zoo to have him transferred there on February 19th.

The zoo reported that the fox is now receiving care at its Animal Health Center, where veterinarians are conducting health assessments after its lengthy travel.

According to the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), the fox is currently being cared for by animal and veterinary teams at the Bronx Zoo’s Animal Health Center. Early assessments suggest the fox is doing well.

Veterinarians are waiting for the results of further standard tests to help them determine the next steps.

After the fox receives a clean bill of health from the zoo’s veterinarians, they will collaborate with wildlife specialists to find a suitable permanent home for it.
