Steve Coogan’s ‘Dr. Strangelove’ Trailer Pays Homage to Stanley Kubrick Original (EXCLUSIVE)

The National Theatre Live in the U.K. has revealed the initial preview for their on-screen version of “Dr. Strangelove,” a stage rendition of Stanley Kubrick‘s satirical take on the Cold War, prior to its global cinema premiere.

This film presents Steve Coogan, a seven-time BAFTA winner, in his acclaimed portrayals of Dr. Strangelove, President Merkin Muffley, Group Captain Lionel Mandrake, and Major TJ Kong. The production is an adaptation by Emmy Award-winning Armando Iannucci, directed by Sean Foley, who has won the Olivier Award. Originally shown in London at the Noël Coward Theatre, the live recording was taken, and now it’s being staged at Dublin’s Bord Gáis Energy Theatre.

In their conversation with EbMaster, Kubrick’s masterwork’s senior producer Ollie Gardner and trailer editor Robin Finetto pointed out that the film boasts a daring, dynamic visual aesthetic, and its initial trailer encapsulates this flawlessly. Their aim was to produce a trailer that would echo this originality, highlighting the exceptional stage adaptation team, all while making it relevant for today’s audience.

As a cinema enthusiast, I was utterly captivated by the innovative touches brought to this production to mirror the legendary source material. Hildegard Bechtler’s ingenious set and costume designs, Jessica Hung Han Yun’s mesmerizing lighting, and original compositions by Ben & Max Ringham all played significant roles in creating an immersive experience. The projection design by Akhila Krishnan and Chris Fisher’s illusions seamlessly brought Stanley Kubrick’s unique visual aesthetic to life on stage.

This stage performance showcases a collective group of talented actors. Giles Terera portrays General Buck Turgidson, John Hopkins takes on the role of General Jack D. Ripper, and Tony Jayawardena plays the Russian Ambassador Bakov. The production is orchestrated by Patrick Myles and David Luff, in collaboration with Tulchin Bartner Productions, Playful Productions, and Barbara Broccoli. Jonathan Cameron acts as Executive Producer for the Stanley Kubrick Estate.

The National Theatre Live presentation releases at cinemas worldwide from March 27.
