With the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash, Stephen Lang explained that his character, Colonel Miles Quaritch, and Jake Sully (played by Sam Worthington) are essentially two sides of the same personality.
Fire and Ash is the third Avatar film directed by James Cameron, and the conflict between the human Resources Development Administration and the Na’vi people intensifies across the world of Pandora. The humans are building up their operations, aiming to completely colonize the planet, and are also increasing their hunts for the Tulkun, a whale-like species.
Okay, so the third movie has a lot going on – Kiri, Sigourney Weaver’s character, is really starting to figure out her abilities, which is cool. But honestly, the most gripping part for me was watching Jake Sully and Quaritch. Their rivalry gets so intense, and they end up mirroring each other in some really unsettling ways. It’s like they’re becoming two sides of the same coin!
In the new film, Quaritch follows Sully’s example and allies himself with the fearsome Mangkwan Na’vi clan, led by Verang (Oona Chaplin). This unexpected partnership creates a powerful combination of Na’vi strength and RDA technology. Before the film’s release, director James Lang discussed how Quaritch and Sully actually have more in common than they realize.

Lang points out that Quaritch and Sully have always shared a lot of similarities, but it’s not until the third movie that they’re beginning to recognize this connection themselves.
It’s not a perfect comparison, but the two characters definitely have a lot in common. I don’t think they would have noticed it themselves back then, or even acknowledged it. However, as the story unfolds, it becomes more and more obvious how similar they are in many ways.
Simply put, the connection between Quaritch and Varang echoes the romance between Sully and Neytiri from the first film. However, unlike Sully and Neytiri, who connected through genuine respect and a shared love for Pandora, Quaritch and Varang are primarily using each other to get what they want.

Fortunately, the intense conflict between their characters doesn’t affect their personal relationship. Lang confirmed that he and Sam Worthington remain friendly and supportive of each other off-screen.
Despite everything, Lang consistently delivers exciting and well-choreographed fight scenes throughout the movie series.
I need to hit hard without actually landing a blow to his chin. There are a lot of difficulties you have to overcome when doing something physically demanding like this.
Okay, so I’m really hoping we get to see Quaritch and Sully battling it out forever! But while we wait for more Avatar, I’ve been reading up on James Cameron’s thoughts on using AI actors – it’s pretty interesting. I also found a guide on when the best time to hit the bathroom is during the sequel – seriously, you don’t want to miss anything! And finally, I’m trying to figure out what all the buzz about ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ is about – sounds like the next big thing!
