Interest in Stephen King’s The Institute is growing on streaming platforms as viewers anticipate a second season. However, two other King adaptations have recently been cancelled. The Talisman, which was being developed by the creators of Stranger Things, won’t be moving forward at Netflix, and the Duffer brothers have admitted the story presented challenges for adaptation.
I was really bummed to hear that Becka Paulson, the series Jordan Peele was developing, won’t be moving forward at The CW. Apparently, with the network changing hands, their plans have shifted. It’s a shame, but thankfully, it doesn’t seem like Jordan Peele is stopping completely – his other projects still seem to be full steam ahead.
Since the start of the year, the sci-fi thriller The Institute has been a popular show on MGM+ in the U.S. It began in the #8 spot but has been consistently climbing the charts, aiming to regain its previous #1 position. Currently, it’s holding steady at #7.
Based on Stephen King’s 2019 novel, the thriller The Institute follows Luke Ellis, a brilliant teenager who is kidnapped and wakes up in a mysterious place. This organization, known as ‘The Institute,’ holds children captive and exploits their special powers. The series also stars Ben Barnes, Simone Miller, Fionn Laird, Hannah Galway, Julian Richings, Robert Joy, Martin Roach, and Mary-Louise Parker.
The series got off to a fantastic start as MGM+’s most-watched premiere ever, and has been quickly renewed for a second season of eight episodes. It’s made by experienced television creators, including Benjamin Cavell and Jack Bender, who both worked on the hit show Justified. Bender also directed LOST and From, and both he and Cavell will return for season 2.
I was immediately hooked by the show, watching Luke desperately try to escape his awful circumstances and help his friends do the same. While some critics thought it relied a little too much on familiar Stephen King themes, it quickly gained a dedicated fanbase – and I totally understand why! It really became one of the strongest dramas MGM+ has to offer, in my opinion.
Now that the show has been renewed, future episodes have the opportunity to expand on its initial popularity. This is partly because the series, The Institute, is diverging from the original book in ways that suggest it’s being developed for a longer run.
