The Green Mile centers around John Coffey, a large Black man wrongly convicted of a terrible crime – the assault and murder of two young girls. While working as a prison guard, Paul Edgecomb and his colleagues realize Coffey’s gentle nature makes it hard to believe he could commit such violence. As they get to know him, and discover he has a mysterious, supernatural ability, they begin to question his guilt, especially as his execution date approaches.
Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan led the cast of The Green Mile, playing prison guard Paul Edgecomb and John Coffey, respectively. David Morse, James Cromwell, Sam Rockwell, and Patricia Clarkson also appeared in the film.
The Green Mile Was a Major Success
The fantasy drama was well-received by both critics and audiences, earning a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 78% from critics and a remarkable 94% audience score. It garnered four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (for Duncan), Best Sound, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Critics especially praised the film’s emotional impact, direction, and the performances of Hanks and Duncan.
