This month, HBO Max will release a new series continuing the terrifying tale of Pennywise, the creature known as ‘It’ from Stephen King’s novel. While the series, based on the book and the 2017 & 2019 movies, isn’t out for a few weeks yet, it’s already received high praise – from Stephen King himself!
Andy Muschietti successfully brought Stephen King’s terrifying novel to the big screen in two parts, *It: Chapter One* and *It: Chapter Two*, released in 2017 and 2019. The films were a massive commercial and critical success, earning over $1.1 billion worldwide. Now, Muschietti is involved as an executive producer in a new prequel series set to premiere on October 26, 2025.
Although official reviews aren’t due for over a week, Stephen King couldn’t wait to share his thoughts after watching the series. He posted a brief reaction on social media, stating:
“Welcome to Derry is amazing. First episode is terrifying.”
Stephen King’s approval is the ultimate sign of success for any of his adaptations, and it appears he’s pleased with *Welcome to Derry*. That’s a good indication audiences will enjoy it too. While its success isn’t guaranteed, the return of Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise, combined with the Muschiettis’ involvement, suggests fans of the previous films will likely love this revisit to the town of Derry.

It’s rare for a TV show to confidently plan beyond a single season, but director Andy Muschietti has a clear vision for *Welcome to Derry*. He intends to span three seasons, telling the story of Pennywise by moving backwards through time, covering a full century. He’s explained that this is the plan, stating previously:
Each season of the show will focus on a different historical disaster. We’re telling the story in reverse chronological order, starting with 1962 in season one, then moving to 1935 in season two, and finally 1908 in season three.
It’s hoped that enough people will watch *Welcome to Derry* to allow the show to run for all three seasons director Muschietti has planned. Pennywise, despite being a terrifying child killer, remains one of Stephen King’s most beloved characters. He’s likely one of the few characters who could successfully carry a series for multiple seasons.
