Stephen King shared the most unsettling scene from the It: Welcome to Derry series that has stayed with him, a significant compliment considering he’s a renowned horror author.
This new installment is a prequel set in 1962, 27 years before the events of the 2017 film IT. It explores Pennywise’s earlier period of terror, taking place during the Cold War. According to our review, the show expands on the history of the town and its iconic clown, and doesn’t shy away from intense and shocking violence affecting all the characters.
The show has proven popular with viewers, who are fascinated by subtle references to dangerous events from the past in the original novel and have developed their own explanations for them.
The author recently praised the show in an interview and shared the one scene he finds particularly disturbing and can’t get out of his head.
Stephen King can’t stop thinking about the pickle jar scene in It: Welcome to Derry Episode 2

Stephen King says a scene in the second episode of ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ – involving a pickle jar – has stuck with him, which is notable because the scene doesn’t even feature the clown Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard).
Stephen King told the New York Post he’s a big fan of ‘Welcome to Derry.’ He highlighted its many frightening moments and strange imagery, specifically recalling a memorable and unsettling scene involving a supermarket and pickle jars.
Honestly, I think Andy Muschietti is a total master of horror. He really knows how to get under your skin, and I have a feeling some of the scenes in his new movie are going to seriously haunt people’s dreams!
The scene centers on Lily, played by Clara Stack, as she walks through a supermarket. Things quickly turn unsettling when the aisles begin to shrink and the other shoppers display disturbing smiles. Soon, Lily finds herself trapped by endless rows of pickle jars—jars that shockingly contain the remains of her deceased father. She’s then assaulted by grotesque, pickled tentacles and decaying flesh. It’s a truly horrifying experience.

Before the show begins, Lily’s father died in a terrible accident at the factory where he worked. Lily believes she caused his death because she visited him at work and left her ring there. Her father went back inside to retrieve it, and while trying to repair a broken machine, he was pulled in and tragically killed.
In Episode 2, the unsettling scene with the pickle isn’t just meant to frighten Lily – it’s how Pennywise preys on her fears, which are as nourishing to him as physical food. Stephen King appreciated this sequence because it’s more than just a jump scare; it delves into Lily’s deepest anxieties.
While we wait to learn more about Pennywise’s past, you can explore how the show ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ ties into ‘The Mist,’ discover why the finale was altered, and check out a hidden Easter egg from ‘IT: Chapter Two’ that many viewers didn’t notice.
