Stephen King expressed on his Bluesky account that he won’t cast a vote for this year’s Oscars because of the ongoing L.A. fires. Furthermore, he advocates for the cancellation of the Oscars event under the current distressing circumstances in Los Angeles. The awards ceremony is still scheduled for March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
King decided not to vote for the Oscars this year, feeling that maybe they shouldn’t be held at all given the current situation. He also expressed his concern about the city of Los Angeles being on fire, as there would be no glamour in such circumstances.
Following the Los Angeles fires, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has chosen to prolong the voting period for the Oscars and postpone the announcement of nominations until January 22nd. Initially, the nominations were set to be declared on the 17th of January. The Academy has also scrapped their annual Oscar Nominees Luncheon, which was due to take place on February 10th. Instead, they are planning to redirect $250,000 from the luncheon budget towards aid for wildfire relief efforts.
Following the initial outbreak of fires, Emmy-winning actress Jean Smart appealed on Instagram for television networks to think deeply about canceling any award shows during “Hollywood’s festive season,” and instead use the earnings to aid first responders and those affected by the fires in L.A.
Hey there! Keeping the utmost respect in mind, as we approach the festive time in Hollywood, I sincerely hope that any television networks broadcasting the upcoming awards will give thought to not airing them and instead donating the earnings they would have received to those affected by the fires and the brave firefighters who are working tirelessly.” (Smart wrote)
However, not all individuals share King and Smart’s perspective. More recently, Rosanna Arquette expressed her thoughts on EbMaster about why it might be inappropriate to cancel the 2025 Oscars ceremony.
This year, celebrating art is not just for fun, she explained. It’s about leveraging art to rebuild, motivate, and aid those who are in dire need. I had a thought one night: ‘What if we combined a Jerry Lewis-style telethon with the Oscars?’ Picture Billy Crystal hosting the event. Although he lost his home, he would be an ideal choice to bring everyone together, serving as a reminder of what we can accomplish when united.
Arquette first expressed her idea about Bluesky, stating: “It would be wonderful if this year’s SAG awards, Oscars, and Grammys could transform into fundraising events to collect money for the community, Los Angeles city, families who have lost their homes, pets, and precious memories, as well as our brave firefighters who have saved lives.
The Grammys have confirmed that their 2025 event will proceed on February 2nd, Sunday, as scheduled, but with a focus on charitable contributions to aid those affected by the L.A. fires. It remains undecided whether the customary glamorous red carpet will be present.
