Stephen Colbert and his CBS show, The Late Show, are nearing their end after being cancelled in July. He’s received a lot of support from fans, other late-night hosts, and recently won an Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show. Before the show finishes in 2026, Colbert still hopes to achieve one major goal: an interview with Pope Leo XIV.
Stephen Colbert has several years remaining on The Late Show, but landing an interview with the Pope – even a hypothetical Pope Leo XIV – would require significant coordination, given how busy the Pope likely is. He’s been wanting to interview the head of the Catholic Church for a while now. In a recent interview with GQ, he discussed people he’d like to interview but hasn’t yet had the opportunity, and the Pope was among them.
I was really hoping to interview Pope Francis. He struck me as a fascinating person.
Stephen Colbert frequently discusses his Catholic faith on The Late Show. With the passing of Pope Francis in April, his hope for an interview with him is no longer possible, leading him to speculate about the possibility of interviewing Pope Leo. While Peyton Manning couldn’t get the first American pope on ESPN2, Colbert believes he might have a better chance. He then suggested a potential interaction with the Pope.
Hey Leo, let’s go to Chicago! We could grab some deep-dish pizza and catch a White Sox game. I don’t have much time left, and if I could spend it with anyone, it’d be him. I’d even travel all the way to Rome just to see him – I’ve heard it’s a beautiful city.
Though Stephen Colbert wasn’t born in Chicago, he launched his comedy career at Second City, just like many former Saturday Night Live performers. He’s also a Chicago Cubs fan – even though his friend prefers the White Sox – proving he’s willing to put aside team loyalties for important conversations, like one with the pope. Colbert has mentioned wanting to focus on making The Late Show a success before thinking about future projects, and he recently landed a role on Elsbeth. Securing an interview with the first American pope would certainly help him achieve that goal.
Although many were surprised when The Late Show was cancelled, Colbert has expressed a desire for late-night talk shows to remain on television, especially after Jimmy Kimmel’s show faced a temporary break. He also addressed speculation that political factors contributed to the cancellation of his show, firmly stating that he had no involvement in any wrongdoing.
Despite the recent cancellations, Stephen Colbert continues to attract high-profile guests to The Late Show, including Ted Danson, Julia Roberts, Michelle Obama, Tom Hanks, and Emma Thompson, just to name a few. Whether Pope Leo XIV will be joining them in 2026 remains to be seen, but Colbert has offered to travel to Chicago or Rome to make it happen!
