Stephen Colbert feels he can now speak freely, as he strongly criticized Paramount, the company that will soon no longer be producing his show, The Late Show. In a recent interview with GQ, he discussed their decision to cancel the show after paying Donald Trump $16 million to settle a lawsuit stemming from a 60 Minutes segment. While Paramount claims the two events aren’t related, it appears to many that the show was cancelled to satisfy Trump. Colbert explained, “From a business perspective, I see it as a network decision. I understand why people would think that, because the parent company—I won’t say who made the call, because I don’t know, and no one will tell us—decided to pay the president $16 million to settle a lawsuit that their own lawyers said had no basis.”
Colbert addressed the rumors, admitting he wasn’t sure if they were entirely accurate. He stated that the situation clearly harmed the network and its news division, and questioned why anyone would intentionally cause such damage except to gain favor with someone else. He acknowledged that people might suspect his involvement, given that the corporation had acted similarly in the past. However, Colbert insisted he had no part in it and wasn’t interested in getting involved, stating it wasn’t his responsibility to fix.
Even though he’s no longer facing legal battles with them, the impact of those issues is still being felt. On November 2nd, 60 Minutes broadcast an interview with the former president, who had previously sued and criticized the show. He stated he received “a lot of money” from 60 Minutes and went on to compliment Paramount CEO David Ellison and conservative writer Bari Weiss, who Ellison appointed to lead CBS News on October 6th. Trump expressed optimism about the future of news, saying, “I really do see good things happening,” and praised the new ownership at CBS as “the greatest thing that’s happened in a long time to a free and open and good press.” It appears he’s now satisfied.
