Stellar Blade Success Helps Korean Games Thrive, Ex PlayStation Boss Believes

According to former PlayStation president Shuhei Yoshida, the strong performance of the action game Stellar Blade on PS5 and PC could be a turning point, helping Korean game developers gain wider recognition and success.

I was reading an interview with a former PlayStation boss from G-Star in Korea, and it was really interesting. He talked about visiting the team at Shift Up – the folks who made Stellar Blade – back in 2019 and 2020. He was blown away by what they were working on, saying everything – the 3D models, how realistic it all looked, the graphics, and the action – was just top-notch. Seriously, he said the quality was exceptional all around.

Thanks to these discussions, the game was released on PlayStation 5 and PC, and it has since sold over three million copies on both platforms.

Just as Black Myth: Wukong’s success boosted the Chinese gaming scene with increased attention and investment, Yoshida hopes Stellar Blade can do the same – becoming a symbol of more than just one game.

He explained that Stellar Blade is more than just a hit game. He thinks its success could encourage other Korean game developers to follow their dreams. In fact, he believes the recent increase in confidence among Korean creators, and even today’s event, are partly due to the positive impact of Stellar Blade.

Stellar Blade has quickly become popular with players on both PlayStation 5 and PC since its release last year. Developers are already working on a sequel, which could be available within the next two years, and is expected to further grow the Korean gaming industry.
