The announcement has been made – SteamOS from Valve is set to expand to various platforms in the near future. Notably, the Lenovo Legion Go S will be the initial handheld gaming device to utilize this operating system, as unveiled at CES 2025. This compact Lenovo device operates on the same Linux-based OS that powers Valve’s Steam Deck.

The main advantage of SteamOS is its user-friendly interface and compatibility with smaller screens, which sets it apart from Windows 11 alternatives. However, it lacks the versatility of running games from various storefronts. Yet, SteamOS compensates by offering a smooth and effortless experience due to its design. In essence, if you’re seeking a portable gaming PC that’s easy to handle without the hassle of complex operations and are content with using Steam exclusively, these new Lenovo devices might be just what you need.

Regarding the latest Lenovo model, known as the Legion Go S, it seems poised to challenge the Steam Deck due to some hardware adjustments. Notably, unlike the Switch, it won’t come with detachable controllers, but it will retain a compact trackpad positioned under the face buttons. These portable gaming devices are expected to showcase considerable power thanks to the newly developed AMD Z2 Go chip. Additionally, they will feature a 120Hz adjustable refresh rate screen and customizable levers on the rear side.

Lenovo plans to debut two models running on Windows OS in May. The first model, priced at $730, comes with a 1TB SSD, 32GB of RAM, and an operating system from Microsoft. A second model, costing $600, features the same Windows OS but with 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD. Moreover, in May, Lenovo is expected to introduce the Legion Go S powered by SteamOS, though specific hardware details are still under wraps. We do know that it will retail at $500. Lastly, Valve has committed to providing updates for this device through SteamOS.
