Valve has updated its rules for developers using AI in games on Steam. While AI isn’t banned, developers now have to clearly state how they’re using it.
Simon Carless, founder of GameDiscoverCo, recently noted a change on Steam. Valve has updated the wording of the form developers fill out to indicate if their game uses artificial intelligence.
The platform now offers more clarity on when you need to disclose the use of AI tools. While you still need to be upfront about some AI applications, not everything requires a disclosure.
Steam clarifies what counts as AI use
Valve has stated that developers don’t need to reveal if they use AI tools like coding helpers or programs designed to speed up their work, according to Carless.
Steam has changed its rules about disclosing AI use. The new guidelines clarify that developers don’t need to mention AI tools used simply to improve efficiency, meaning they won’t have to flag many common AI applications.

Developers still need to be upfront about using AI in a couple of specific instances. If AI helps create anything for the game itself, its store page, or any promotional content, developers must explain exactly how they used it.
The second rule covers games that create AI content as you play. If a game makes images, sounds, text, or anything else using AI while you’re playing, developers need to clearly state that it does so.
So, Valve just announced the Steam Awards for 2025, and I was stoked to see Hollow Knight: Silksong win Game of the Year! It’s been a long wait, but it’s awesome to see it finally get the recognition it deserves.
