A major question surrounding Valve’s Steam Machine is its price. Many have speculated about how much it will cost, and Linus Sebastian from Linus Tech Tips recently shared information Valve reportedly gave him during a meeting.
During the WAN Show, Linus admitted he doesn’t know the final price of the Steam Machine. However, after talking with Valve, he believes it won’t cost about the same as a typical new gaming console.
I was hoping the device would be priced like a console, where the manufacturer makes money from a cut of each game sold – about 30% over its lifetime. I think that would have made it a better value. When they asked what I meant by ‘console price,’ I explained that I was thinking around $500, according to IGN.
“Nobody said anything, but the energy of the room wasn’t great.”
Okay, so everyone’s still just guessing about how much the Steam Machine will actually cost. I’ve seen estimates everywhere. Some people think a basic model might be around $400, which would be awesome, but others are saying it could easily go over $1,000! A lot of folks are also comparing it to the price of the PS5, so who knows at this point, really?
Valve is currently facing challenges like tariffs, rising costs for memory and storage, unpredictable supply chains, and the fact that they can’t offer subsidies like established console makers, according to analyst Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners. Despite these hurdles, the Steam Deck’s technical specifications indicate Valve aimed to price it similarly to the PlayStation 5.
Linus previously mentioned that Valve couldn’t give a price for the Steam Machine because the market was changing quickly.
They did offer one clue: the device will be priced similarly to a PC, not a console. Unlike consoles, where game sales help lower the initial hardware cost, this device will be sold at a competitive PC price point, they explained.
Valve has stated its Steam Machine will be “affordable” and worth the price, but that’s a common claim from most companies, so it doesn’t really give us any specific details about the cost.
The Steam Machine is scheduled to release in 2026, though pre-orders haven’t started and the specific release date is still unconfirmed. You can find a comprehensive overview of what’s known so far at TopMob.
