Steam just made record-breaking $1.6 billion revenue in a single month: Report

Steam finished 2025 with its most successful month ever, thanks to a huge surge in holiday shopping and overall player spending.

Steam earned a record $1.6 billion in revenue during December 2025, according to data from Alinea Analytics.

Steam had over 100 million players in December, showing just how much money was spent on the platform during the holidays.

The increase in activity coincides with Steam’s yearly Winter Sale, a period consistently known for high spending on PC games. Significant discounts on games, combined with bundled content and popular titles at record-low prices, drove the surge in purchases.

Steam hits record-breaking holiday sales revenue

The popular extraction shooter game, ARC Raiders, was a major sales driver, selling approximately 250,000 copies just on Boxing Day.

Although ARC Raiders sold well over the holidays, Counter-Strike 2 still earned the most revenue on Steam. This shows that free-to-play games that make money from players buying cosmetic items are still the biggest earners on the platform.

Valve earns money from every CS2 skin sale on the Steam marketplace, and because CS2 is Steam’s most played game, there are a lot of these sales happening.

During the recent Winter Sale, both Detroit: Become Human from Quantic Dream and the cooperative climbing game, Peak, saw huge sales numbers. Players purchased 993,000 copies of Detroit: Become Human, attracted by its discounted price of just $4. Peak also performed well, selling 779,000 copies over the two-week sale period.

January was a record-breaking month for Steam, following a peak of 41.8 million players on January 4th, 2026. It’s still uncertain if Steam will surpass these numbers later this year, but it’s a strong beginning to the New Year.
