However, Corden argues that PlayStation also needs to build its own robust online store to truly compete with Steam and reach its full potential.
PlayStation needs to pull its games from Steam
On the recent Xbox Two podcast, Jez Corden predicted a future where both Xbox and PlayStation face competition from Steam. He believes Steam could release a new line of gaming machines – possibly called ‘Fremont’ – as early as 2026, potentially disrupting the entire console market.
Steam is poised to become a major player in the handheld gaming market. They’ve spent years developing their platform, understanding what gamers want from consoles, and improving their software. Plus, they have a huge library of games from a variety of publishers.
Corden argues that Sony should capitalize on Microsoft’s upcoming ‘Xbox Magnus’ system to avoid the fees Steam charges on game sales. Reports suggest Magnus will be a console-PC hybrid, potentially supporting platforms like Battle.net and Steam. To compete, PlayStation needs its own digital store on Magnus, allowing Xbox players to purchase games directly and giving Sony all the revenue.
The product is anticipated to be profitable, as Corden forecasts strong initial sales for Magnus in its first year.
Dedicated fans will likely adopt the Magnus system rapidly. Estimates suggest up to 20 million players could switch to the new hardware within its first year. This means 20 million Xbox users could become potential customers for Steam and PlayStation, buying games on those platforms that weren’t previously available to them. If I were Sony, I’d create my own store specifically for Magnus and avoid the standard 30% fee.
Jez Corden is hopeful about Microsoft and Xbox’s future, despite recent negative publicity caused by leaks – specifically, the expected high price of the Magnus device (between $1,000 and $1,500). He believes this new hardware could allow Sony to appeal to Xbox players and potentially draw them away from Steam.
