With so many games available on Steam, especially popular hero shooters, FragPunk is easy to overlook. Though it launched earlier this year without much attention, the developers have consistently updated it, and it’s now receiving positive feedback from players on Steam.
It’s a 5v5 hero shooter, but with a really unique element. You can use special cards called Shard Cards to do crazy things and change how the game works – like laying and hatching eggs for advantages, or even making enemies’ heads huge for easier targeting. You can also alter the environment, like summoning giant patches of grass to use as cover.
Besides the main 5v5 mode, the game features a “duel mode” that starts automatically during tied matches, or can be played on its own. The game is generally very over-the-top and customizable – you can personalize your weapons with lots of stickers, and special Shard Cards dramatically alter the maps during gameplay.
As of about a week ago, Fragpunk was still being updated frequently. The latest update added Frozen Storm weapons and laid the groundwork for the “Deck Gear Up” mode, which started on January 1st. With active development and a thriving community, it’s a game worth considering if you enjoy this type of genre.

I’ve been checking out FragPunk, and the best part is it’s totally free-to-play! The developers are really emphasizing that you can get every single card without spending a dime, and there’s no annoying stuff locked behind paywalls.
